KaVo Kerr
SonicFill 3
Building on the success of its predecessors, SonicFill 3 offers even more effective and efficient adaptation, handling, sculpting, and polishing
There’s always room for improvement. To some, it’s merely a cliché, but to Kavo Kerr those words are a call to action, and that is why the company introduced the SonicFill 3 composite system. Like its predecessors, SonicFill 3 replaces time-consuming, multistage layering with a singlefill composite system that eliminates the need for a liner or final capping layer. However, Kavo Kerr has advanced the system with new bulk fill features to improve adaptation, allow for easier extrusion, and enhance handling, sculpting, and polishing. The results, according to KaVo Kerr, are faster patient visits, more predictable results, and long-lasting restorations.
“The combination of great cavosurface adaptability, significant depth of cure, and outstanding esthetics eliminates the need for multiple layers of different composites of varying viscosities and translucencies,” explained Dr. Craig Ratner, when asked to share his opinion of SonicFill 3 as part of this DPS evaluation. “This translates into a more solid restoration with great esthetics in less time,” he added.
Time Savings
Always on the lookout for an easy-to-handle bulk fill composite that reduces procedure time on children, Dr. Tim Fagan declared that bulk fills like SonicFill 3 “allow for quicker placement of the restoration with wiggly pediatric patients.” Dr. Elizabeth Fleming agreed, saying, “The delivery system and bulk filling save time for patients who cannot tolerate a lengthy appointment.” Describing SonicFill 3 as “great for patients with special needs,” Marko Farion, DDS, announced, “It can really restore preps in a flash!”
Acknowledging a learning curve, Dr. James Merrett commented, “It made our fill experience more efficient and faster,” and Dr. Dilip Dudhat said, “It saves time and improves productivity.” While working in an area that was difficult to keep dry, Dr. Barton Barre told DPS that the procedure was accomplished in half the time, and Delitha Taylor, DDS, said, “It allows me to do quadrant dentistry faster [and is] truly easy to use.”
Dr. Padmaja Mutyala said SonicFill 3 proved critical when doing quadrant dentistry for patients needing multiple restorations, adding, “It makes me comfortable to know I can use SonicFill and save chairside time and work efficiently.” Dr. Ryan Willden said SonicFill 3 allowed him to fill more of the filling at one time, and Dr. Charley Cheney called it a “quick and easy placement for all interproximal restorations [that] reduced the number of times to reintroduce composite.”

Handling and Versatility
In addition to simpler extrusion and improved handling, SonicFill 3 offers excellent adaptation, low shrinkage, and a depth of cure up to 5 mm. “It goes into the prep creamy and somewhat flowable, and then hardens with a curing light,” Dr. Fagan described. Dr. Dudhat said it provides excellent handling, and Dr. Ratner explained, “The sonic activation allows the composite to flow and adapt to the cavosurface, obviating the need for a flowable base or liner.”
Calling SonicFill 3 “easier to sculpt [with an] improved setting time,” Dr. Taylor found it especially helpful when she had a small undercut and subgingival. “I was able to cure up 4 mm of depth without problems,” shared Dr. Merrett, and Trupti Nadkarni, DMD, said SonicFill 3 resolved any previous issues she had with postop sensitivity, adaptation, and air bubbles in fillings. “I have sampled all of the popular competitors, and SonicFill 3 is the most adaptable universal composite available,” said Dr. Chris Furlan.
Ideal for Class I, II, and V restorations, as well as for core buildups, “SonicFill 3 can be used in many ways,” according to Dr. Ratner. “I like the ability to quickly and efficiently place a Class II composite,” shared Dr. Karyn Halpern, who also said she loves to use this product for her core buildups. Dr. Dudhat said SonicFill 3 helped to ensure a successful outcome in procedures involving post bulk fill interproximal areas and large occlusal surfaces.
Esthetics
Praising its “great shade matching ability,” Dr. Farion called SonicFill 3 “incredible” and said, “It definitely saves time over layering without compromising esthetics.” He further described the system as “a great product for posterior bulk fill [and an] improvement on the SonicFill 2 [with] no occasional voids.” Dr. Dudhat identified “shade matching ability and efficiency” as his favorite features, and Dr. Barre suggested “more product per carpule” as an improvement. “Its durability and natural polish make it my restorative material of choice,” shared Dr. Furlan.
Overall Satisfaction
All of the evaluators said they would continue to use SonicFill 3 and would recommend it to colleagues. “A good product has been made even better,” shared Dr. Furlan, adding, “I have advocated its use to many of my colleagues.” Calling it a fantastic material, Dr. Rodolfo Olmos concluded, “This great restoration material has given me the opportunity to surprise my patients on a daily basis. I couldn’t see myself using another composite material.”
