Biodentine XP
With an all-in-one capsule and new mixing and delivery system, this dentin substitute improves a clinician’s workflow from start to finish
Whenever possible, Dr. Jason Wetmore prefers to offer conservative treatment options to his patients, but it’s not always easy. Knowing that “treating deep caries while minimizing root canals and maintaining patient comfort can be challenging,” he was thrilled to learn that Septodont’s new Biodentine XP dentin restoration system can help make the entire procedure easier, from mixing to dispensing to completion.
The first all-in-one dentin substitute to fully replace dentin, Biodentine XP combines powder and liquid in 1 ready-to-use capsule, mixes quickly and consistently, and can be applied directly to the tooth. Noting that it “works very well treating deep decay,” Dr. Wetmore reported, “Numerous pulp caps and pulpotomies were successful with minimal reports of postop sensitivity.” Concluding that he “really likes this product and plans to use it on more indications in the future,” he shared, “Biodentine XP is a wonderful tool to confidently offer conservative treatment options with a high degree of success.”
Versatility, Bioactivity, & Biocompatibility
Biodentine XP is a versatile dentin restoration system indicated for temporary enamel or permanent dentin restorations, deep or large carious lesions, deep cervical or radicular lesions, pulp capping, pulpotomies, root and furcation perforations, internal/external resorptions, apexifications, and retrograde surgical fillings. Its bioactive properties help preserve pulp vitality, and biocompatibility helps reduce the risk of tissue and pulp reaction, according to Septodont.
“Biodentine XP allows for confidence in treating a tooth where the pulp is in danger, allowing me to shift my treatment protocols more to saving a tooth without root canal treatment,” shared Dr. Jonathan Dubin. Appreciating Biodentine XP’s versatility for “multiple situations that involve saving the vitality of the pulp,” pedodontist Dr. John Jackfert liked “not needing to have 3 or 4 different pulp medicaments and cavity liners,” and called it “superior to all MTA products.” For Joshua Conway, DDS, Biodentine XP “provided a predictable replacement of deep dentin loss to facilitate ideal preps and restorations.” Calling it “nice to have in my tool bag,” Dr. Sean Grady successfully used it “as a base after removing deep carious lesions and to repair a perforation on the pulpal floor during an endodontic procedure.”
Ease of Use
For convenience, each cartridge contains powder and liquid and is ready to mix to a homogeneous consistency in Septodont’s compact XP mixer. Biodentine XP can be applied directly to the tooth with the applicator gun or in the root with a hand instrument. Clinicians can choose XP 200 or XP 500 for the volume that best fits the procedure.
The original “Biodentine has always been a great product for direct or indirect pulp capping and as a deep cavity restorative, but it was a pain to mix and deliver,” shared Dr. Dubin. “Biodentine XP’s new capsule design and new mixing and delivery system have solved that problem.” Dr. Grady said, “It is very easy to mix and to apply, much easier than other materials,” and Dr. Jackfert noted, “The mixing and delivery system is very user friendly and consistent; it eliminates guesswork and user error of mixing it.”
Noting that “Septodont is a valued dental company,” Dr. Marc Hendler praised the vertical, space-saving design of the mixer, while Dr. Robert Miller said he did not have room for another mixing device on limited counter space, although ease of mixing was his favorite feature. Dr. Conway felt that needing to use a triturator was inconvenient. Suggesting that the capsule should be compatible with other mixing units, Dr. Tim Fagan shared, “The mixing capsule allows for a proper mix every time.”

Time Savings & Final Results
Being able to “immediately restore the tooth the day of placing Biodentine XP saves multiple trips for the patient and saves time for me, which equals saving money,” shared Dr. Jackfert. He called the system “much more convenient, consistent, and faster” than similar products, and Dr. Charley Cheney agreed that “easy dispensing offers improved efficiency.” Endodontist Dr. Alan Sedell said, “It provided a more consistent, faster, easier, and simplified technique for predictable restoration of compromised teeth. I do not see any downside to incorporating this product into my daily practice.”
Although some aspects of the material save time for clinicians, several evaluators felt the setting time was too long, especially for pediatric patients. Dr. Jackfert said his patients “had no pain sensitivity and my restorations looked great.”
Overall Satisfaction
“I really enjoyed using Biodentine XP and love how many different treatments I can use it for,” added Dr. Jackfert. “It was easy to use for a consistent and predictable procedure,” said Dr. Sedell. “It made chairside treatments easier and is a worthwhile addition to my dental armamentarium.”
