CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal Evaluation
With one universal shade, Light Diffusion Technology, and ideal physical and handling properties, this universal composite simplifies posterior restorations
Performing direct posterior restorations can pose numerous challenges for even the most experienced dentist. Faced with inadequate interproximal contact, finding the most natural and esthetic shade match, and the risk of postoperative sensitivity, dentists are likely to jump at the chance to try a material that eases the woes of posterior restorations, especially if that material has been proven to withstand high mechanical stresses.
Hoping to “make the posterior restoration procedure simple and efficient,” Dr. Paul Nguyen was eager to try Kuraray’s CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal composite, which employs a universal shade concept to simplify shade selection, save chair time, and reduce inventory. “Since CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal offers a single-shade option, it cuts back on inventory and makes the procedure fast and easy,” described Dr. Nguyen. “When doing a Class I posterior restoration, the composite allowed me to complete the procedure quickly due to easy placement, good handling, and the ability to shape and blend with surrounding tooth structure.”
Along with several other dentists, Dr. Nguyen put CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal to the test in his practice for several weeks, and then shared how it improved his direct restorative procedures.
One Universal Shade
CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal features Kuraray’s Light Diffusion Technology that easily blends into surrounding tooth structure for optimal esthetic outcomes. “I loved the ease of shade matching and its chameleon effect,” said Martin Sobieraj, DMD, who reported success with all classes of fillings, even in the anterior. “Patients loved that the composite matched their existing teeth,” he added. Praising the “excellent shade matching,” Dr. Nathan Vassiliades said the composite “has made matching anterior composites easy, with great color margins and great transitions. I normally don’t enjoy doing composites, but this has made them exciting again.”
Other comments about esthetics ranged from “very easy to polish with no voids” to “one shade is all I need to worry about” to “worked very well in blocking shine-through in implant access openings.” Reporting great results with zirconia restorations, Dr. Nora Donatelli suggested “better shade matching in anterior teeth,” while Dr. Pauline Lu was pleased that “one shade fits all.” Dr. Maria Nowacki reported, “It blended in with most tooth shades,” and Dr. Nicholas DeRobertis said, “The chameleon-like effect blended quite nicely, better than any other multi-shade composites.”

Dispensing & Handling
Recommended for all Class 1 and II restorations and available in 2-mL syringes or .25-gram preloaded tips (PLT), CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal is easy to dispense, which was Dr. Patrice Taylor’s favorite feature. Dr. Marc Hendler said it was easy to use and the compules were convenient, while one dentist had trouble getting the PLT to fit in the composite dispensing gun.
CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal is formulated with a nonsticky consistency that is easy to handle and place and has a working time of 4 minutes 30 seconds, giving clinicians ample time to place and sculpt the composite. “This material did not stick to my instruments, and it was very smooth and fluid when it was moved into areas and crevices,” said Dr. Sobieraj. “I love the sculpting ability.” Calling it “not sticky and easy to maneuver/sculpt,” Dr. Randy Weiner found the composite useful “for anterior teeth and cervical regions on posterior teeth.” Dr. Vassiliades appreciates the longer handling time, Dr. Nguyen said it “handles well and is easy to shape,” and Dr. Lu said she would like a softer texture. Describing the handling as easier than [a competitor’s product], Ranu Mishra, DDS, suggested, “I would like to see a flowable product like this, too.”
Time Savings & Inventory Reduction
Using just one universal shade reduces inventory and simplifies the shade-matching process, saving time for patients and clinicians. “The single-shade option makes the posterior restoration faster and cuts down on inventory,” stated Dr. Nguyen. “We were able to fill multiple restorations with just one shade, and the assistant did not have to match the shade or search for the correct corresponding composite,” explained Mary Gaddis, DDS. “It eliminated the step of selecting a shade, and we no longer need to stock multiple shades of composite for posterior restorations.” Calling CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Uni[1]versal a “true universal shade,” Dr. Taylor reported decreased chair time because of the simplified shade matching process and easy dispensing. It provides a “simplified approach to posterior direct resins without the need for opaque shades,” noted Dr. De Robertis. “Any product that simplifies the direct resin restorative protocol—no matter which portion of the technique is simplified—will find its inclusion in my armamentarium for these restorations.”
Overall Satisfaction
Calling CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal an “excellent product from a fine company,” Dr. Hendler is looking forward to seeing the long-term results of his restorations. “It is a good overall composite that worked very well for posterior restorations, and, thus far, patients have reported no sensitivity,” said Dr. Gaddis. Dr. Taylor concluded, “This composite helps increase productivity and patient comfort by decreasing chair time, and it is esthetically pleasing without any post-treatment sensitivity.”
