Nuance contains proprietary multi-faceted fillers that mimic the opacity, translucency, and optical characteristics of tooth structure by both reflecting and refracting light; this virtually eliminates the need for multi-shade layering. An entirely new delivery system combines advanced ergonomics with unique unit-dosing capabilities.
Esthetics
Because Nuance’s fillers accurately mimic the qualities of tooth structure, 1 body shade can be used for the entire restoration. In thinner areas it appears translucent; on the main tooth body it absorbs and refracts light, creating a dentinlike depth. The chameleon-like quality ensures that Nuance integrates optically with surrounding tooth structure, producing an accurate shade match every time.
Of the 14 dentists who evaluated Nuance, 9 rated restoration simplicity after using a single shade as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good. The evaluators also rated polishability (5 as excellent, 8 as very good, and 1 as good) and chameleon effect (6 as excellent, 4 as very good, and 4 as good). Eight evaluators cited esthetic-related characteristics as the feature they liked most. Comments included “very lifelike,” “great finish,” “excellent polishability and shade-matching,” and “the chameleon effect exceeded my expectations.” One evaluator noted, “Single-shade use and the chameleon effect are better than most composites on the market.”
Ease of Use
The uniquely rectangular Nuance syringe makes it easy to grip when extruding material. Extrusion is accomplished with approximately half the force needed for the other composites and soft rubber pads facilitate turning. The Nuance syringe, which comes with 4 g of material, delivers a “unit dose” of approximately 0.1 g with every half turn (identified by a click), facilitating dentist-assistant communication and creating less waste. With the flip-top flat cap, the syringe easily stands up on the tray and the cap can’t be lost. Two dentists provided positive feedback about the flip-top cap, calling it “very convenient for use and easy for re-capping.”
Ease of use was rated as excellent by 5 evaluators, as very good by 7, and as good by 2. Four evaluators rated ease of syringe dispensing as excellent, 8 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as fair. One evaluator said “the dispensing system for the syringe product is excellent… easy to dispense a uniform amount with each half turn.”
Handling
Nuance has a butter-like consistency; it sculpts smoothly and easily without slumping. Because Nuance is not sticky, procedures aren’t interrupted by the need to reshape anatomy or clean instruments.
Ease of handling the composite with instruments was rated as excellent by 3 evaluators, as very good by 8, and as good by 3. One evaluator called it “a tiny bit sticky,” and 4 cited lack of stickiness as a feature they liked most.
Ease of handling to create contours and form tooth anatomy was rated as excellent by 4 evaluators, as very good by 7, and as good by 3. One evaluator said that Nuance was “easy to handle... no slumping,” and another noted it was “easy to distribute into a preparation and retained the form and anatomy placed.” The evaluator who noted “impressive physical characteristics” said it was “very easy to handle and shape due to the medium viscosity.”
Overall Satisfaction
Overall satisfaction with Nuance Universal Composite was rated as excellent by 7 evaluators, as very good by 4, and as good by 3. Eleven said they would definitely or probably recommend and purchase it. “It’s a very good material,” said an evaluator who called it much better than similar products. “I don’t know the price but it’s probably well worth it.”
