From mind and body to heart and soul, some things in life are inextricably bound together. But when it comes to direct restorations, it takes the expertise and innovation of a company like Kerr Dental to bind together 2 materials that make restorations simpler, quicker, and more reliable.
Powered by Kerr’s OptiBond adhesive technology, SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow creates proven bonds to dentin and enamel. Incorporating a bonding agent into the composite equates to fewer steps, less time and inventory, and simplified restorations.
“I really liked that they incorporated the bonding agent into the product to help save time and eliminate the need to purchase extra products,” shared pediatric dentist Dr. Erica Anand, who knows that every minute counts with her most impatient patients. After using SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow for a few weeks in his practice, Dr. Vladik Crutcher declared, “It makes small repairs and fillings very fast and easy, even when working without an assistant.”
Handling and Time Savings
Available in 4 shades (light, medium, dark, and universal opaque), SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow is available as an intro kit that includes all shades and applicators, and refill syringes are sold individually. The self-adhesive, light-cured material has a flowable and nonslumping consistency. With no separate bonding protocol or agent required, clinicians save time as well as inventory.
“It flowed really well, and handling was great. It allowed me to get into a lot of tight spaces inside interproximal preps,” said Dr. Steven Berk. Dr. Crutcher noted, “It has great properties and is very easy to use with one easy step.” Praising the material’s ability to adapt to prepared teeth, Dr. Kipp Klein said, “It’s easier to place than adhesive composites.”
When pediatric dentist Dr. David Ly didn’t have time to etch, he found that SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow “allowed me to speed up a bit with a 1-step process that made it easier.” He also suggested that more shades would be helpful.
Similarly, pedodontist Dr. Michael Wong welcomed the “very simple 1-step approach” and said the “effective and efficient” composite “facilitated speed and ease of use,” which was especially helpful with uncooperative patients. Dr. Joel Preminger said it allowed him to perform “quicker restorations,” Dr. Tim Fagan called it “a time-saver with no separate bonding agent required,” and Dr. Frank Siracusa said, “It made my workflow easier because of its versatility.”
Final Restoration
SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow produces long-lasting, durable restorations with high shear bond and flexural strength, as well as excellent esthetics—all while reducing the risk of postop sensitivity, according to Kerr.
“It’s an excellent flowable composite that matches the tooth shades very well,” said Dr. Gilberto Henriques, who used the material in Class V restorations. “I was very impressed with the results, and the patients are very satisfied.” Dr. Preminger was pleased with the polishability and shade match, and Dr. Wong described the esthetics as “great.” Also impressed with the final esthetics, Dr. Klein said a Class V buccal restoration on 3 teeth “went very well,” while Dr. Fagan would like it to “maintain its gloss after curing.”
While several evaluators told DPS they were taking a wait-and-see approach to assessing bond strength, a Florida dentist pointed out that “so far none of the restorations placed have debonded.” Dr. Frederick Burger would like to see “long-term studies that show the success of retention without etching,” and Dr. Wong noted, “Only time will tell in regard to longevity and wear.”
Versatility
SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow is indicated for small Class I restorations and as a base/liner for Class I and II restorations. It is also suitable for porcelain and enamel repairs, as a pit and fissure sealant, for blocking of undercuts, and for minor occlusal buildups.
Dr. Siracusa called SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow “very versatile,” and Dr. Berk was able to apply sealants “very efficiently.” For Dr. Burger, the flowable material worked well as a sealant and as a liner for large restorations. Finding the flowable composite helpful for filling in a temporary crown margin, Dr. Rupesh Singla said, “SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow fulfilled the need for a flowable that color matched.”
Overall Satisfaction
Determined to continue using SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow in his practice, Dr. Crutcher shared, “I enjoyed the product and believe it is a wonderful idea.” He also praised its “ease of use and [that it] minimizes materials.”
Dr. Anand concluded, “Using SimpliShade Self-Adhesive Flow was a positive experience when I needed to restore a tooth and time was a major factor for little ones. I really like the time-saving mechanism of having a bonding agent in the product to avoid an extra step.”
