Ask a dozen clinicians to describe the challenges they face with root canal treatments, and you’ll likely get a dozen different answers—everything from fears of file separation to cutting efficiency. But somewhere in those responses lie some common concerns, and they almost always center upon the cornerstone of endo treatments: access to difficult canals.
Dr. Paul Kaplan points to dealing with “unreliable methods by which to negotiate thin, curved, or calcified canals.” For Dr. Varo Boyer, it’s tackling “canal transportation, ledging, and difficult to access posteriors,” and for Dr. Alfred dela Cruz, it’s working with “files that [don’t] reach the apex or dilacerated roots.” Dr. Arthur Schlachtman notes a common challenge is “navigating curved canals,” which was a problem also echoed by Dr. Tony Wu, who agreed that it can be a challenge to “confidently navigate and shape curved root canals.”
No stranger to the concerns of both general dentists and endodontists when it comes to root canal treatments, and upholding its mission of delivering high-quality endodontic products at a substantially lower cost than popular brands, EdgeEndo took note of those challenges and quickly got to work. The result is the company’s latest line of EdgeUtopia files, the EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia, a rotary file shaping system that features a secure shank and handle for better posterior access, a variable taper and optimized tip, and proprietary FireWire Blaze heat-treatment technology for greater cutting efficiency, safety, and flexibility, as well as the ability to maintain curvature.
Cutting Efficiency
Packaged in presterilized blister packs, EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia files are available in 2 shaper sizes and 3 finishing file options, with length choices of 21, 25, and 31 mm, along with a 19mm orifice opener for enhanced access. The convenient assorted pack allows clinicians to experience all 6 files in their preferred length, offering versatility and efficiency for a wide range of endodontic procedures. According to EdgeEndo, the system boasts a blade that is more efficient and resilient than its top selling EdgeTaper Platinum file system.
Dr. dela Cruz found the overall performance of the EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia file system to be “very efficient.” In fact, he said the files “cut easily through calcified coronal third, and didn’t transport the apex or ledge the prep.” Dr. R.J. Sondkar said the files offered “a good, smooth glide while cutting, and the flexibility of the files is great,” although Dr. YuChi Chung found the files to be “a bit stiff” but also said he found that they were “easy to use.”
Dr. Philip Aurbach said, “I would have liked a little more flexibility and memory to the file, although I don’t know if that is possible,” and Dr. Jason Wetmore found EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia to be a “strong and safe, highly flexible, effective file” with “great flexibility and cutting efficiency.” Dr. Reem Mahjoub said, “I did appreciate the strength and cutting power.”
Ability to Navigate Canal Path
The series of 6 taper files that make up the EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia system all operate in forward rotary motion. With a recommended speed of 300 rpm and torque values ranging from 2.5 to 5.1 Ncm, depending on the file, the system ensures optimal file efficiency and allows for flexible canal navigation during endo procedures, a benefit highlighted by several DPS evaluators, including Dr. Todd Sarubin, who called the flexibility “outstanding in some pretty curved canals on upper molars.” Dr. Mahjoub said, “I was able to navigate tight and calcified canals very well, and they resisted unwinding in tight canals.”
Dr. Wu observed that “the files stay straight instead of staying bent like other files, and allow easy insertion into orifices.” Dr. Boyer also had a similar experience, and commented, “I was able to confidently navigate curved roots and calcified canals.” Dr. Schlachtman found the system to be “very good for right angles on canals.”
Resistance to Breakage
Resilient to unwinding and highly flexible, the files offer no bounce-back and a high degree of strength, an observation noted by Dr. Boyer, who said, “The strength was the best feature” and that “usually, when working with dilacerated roots or calcified canals, I fear file separation and take extra caution with the files not to overload them, [but these] have an excellent combination of both strength and flexibility.”
Dr. Aurbach said that “the files performed well, comparable to the gold files I have been using for years now, and I didn’t have any separations or deformation during use.” Dr. Sondkar agreed, saying, “I felt confident using [these] files.” He also reported “a smooth glide while cutting, not too aggressive and very flexible.”
Overall Satisfaction
The majority of evaluators said they were happy with the performance of the file system, including Dr. Wetmore, who said they allowed him to “complete cases smoothly and efficiently, and time is money.” Dr. Kaplan said the files offered a “definitive way by which to clean, shape, and obturate any canal.” Dr. Sondkar agreed, saying, “EdgeEndo has a well-made file system that is a notch above other brands,” and Dr. dela Cruz proclaimed, “These are the new standard for my practice!”
