Using the word “utopia” in a product name might seem like a bit of a risk. But judging by evaluator feedback about EdgeEndo’s EdgeOne Blaze Utopia reciprocating file system, that risk seems to be worth the reward.
Dr. Mark Edington’s utopia came to fruition when “every case performed with these files gave me textbook results.” Dr. Todd Gottlieb had “nothing but success and ease of use with no breakage.” And the files lived up to their name by making canal cleaning and shaping “stress-free” for Dr. Jeffrey Sachs. There’s good reason for these dentists’ enthusiasm, and it all comes down to EdgeEndo’s enhanced technology, which improves file quality and performance while simplifying the root canal process.
Dr. Edington is “moving on” from his current reciprocating files “now that EdgeOne Blaze Utopia has gained my respect,” and Dr. Gottlieb “will be using this product exclusively in the near future.” Dr. Sachs said, “The entire procedure of cleaning and shaping canals has been simplified tremendously by instruments like EdgeOne Blaze Utopia files.” In line with EdgeEndo’s philosophy that “premium technology shouldn’t have to come with a premium price tag,” Dr. Sachs now has precisely what he wanted: “a simple, single instrument system at a lower cost.”
File Sizes and Durability
EdgeEndo’s new FireWire Blaze Heat Treatment enhances the strength of these variable taper reciprocating files, which are presterilized, resistant to unwinding, and feature a noncutting tip and ULTRA-FIT secure shank and handle. Each evaluator chose from the available file sizes (R-Glide, R20, R25, R35, and R45) and lengths (21 mm, 25 mm, and 31 mm), and received matching gutta-percha and paper points.
“I absolutely love this product,” said Dr. Gottlieb, who had experienced breakage with previous files. “I love that I didn’t break any files, and I love the ease of use and feel of the files,” he told DPS. Dr. Peter Guirguis appreciated the range of file sizes and, after previous problems with file separation, was pleased to experience none. “The files feel sturdier and are better [than previous files],” said Dr. Javier Sanchez. Praising the durability of the files, Dr. Alfred dela Cruz would like to see other sizes added to the product line. Dr. Edington said a quicker snap fit to the handpiece “would be great.”
Cutting Performance and Canal Navigation
The design, strength, and flexibility of EdgeOne Blaze Utopia files facilitate shaping and cleaning in even the most challenging canals. The FireWire Blaze Heat Treatment improves cutting performance and flexibility as the files shape canals in a reverse-reciprocating motion. An S-shaped cross-section improves debris removal; reduced shank length allows for posterior access; and the secure shank and handle enable real-time apex locator readings.
“Cutting was excellent, especially with EDTA and lubricant,” said Dr. dela Cruz, who explained that the system “allowed for simple, fast, efficient prepping of root canals, especially on curved roots.” He was even able to shape “an almost 90° dilacerated root without perforation.” Describing the flutes as “more aggressive yet safe,” Dr. Pete Spalitto said the files “worked great and were reliable.”
EdgeOne Blaze Utopia gave endodontist Dr. Paul Kaplan “better control of canal cleaning and shaping” for his 25 to 30 weekly root canal treatments, resulting in “a very predictable result in any type of tooth.” Using the file system, he was able to “reliably clean, shape, and disinfect the root canal spaces in almost every type of tooth, including those that were significantly calcified at the start.” When treating tooth No. 14 with calcified buccal canals, Dr. Kaplan “methodically made my way to all the apices” using EdgeOne Blaze Utopia.
Pleased that “the files bend and rotate to the shape of the canal,” Dr. Sanchez said the flexibility helped him successfully find the accessory canal during a very complex root canal treatment with curved canals.
Ease of Use and System Simplicity
Previously experiencing “too many files and so many systems,” Dr. dela Cruz was pleased that the EdgeOne Blaze Utopia system “simplifies root canal treatments.” Calling it “a very simple system to learn after a brief learning curve,” Dr. Kaplan explained, “I was able to use it in all my cases, which could be completed much more efficiently and predictably.” Dr. David Thurman was impressed with the simplicity and called it “an easy system to learn and implement,” and Dr. Edington shared, “These files work as advertised and with no learning curve.”
Overall Satisfaction
Rating the file system as excellent in every aspect, Dr. Gottlieb has “already mentioned them to several colleagues and would 100% purchase them.” Dr. Kaplan concluded, “I believe that EdgeOne Blaze Utopia definitely has a place in the endodontic armamentarium and will enhance the way we treat endo patients and lead to more predictable results.” Always impressed with EdgeEndo products, Dr. Spalitto declared, “I love EdgeEndo and again wasn’t disappointed.”
