WaveOne Gold Evaluation
Enhanced with a gold thermal treatment, WaveOne Gold delivers a complete system for shaping with optimal performance.
The search for endodontic files that cut safely and efficiently while saving valuable chair time is not an easy one, but Dr. David Landwehr found that Dentsply Sirona's WaveOne Gold reciprocating files are perfect for his needs. "WaveOne Gold is the most straightforward, efficient, and effective way to shape the root canal system," Dr. Landwehr recently told Dental Product Shopper as part of the WaveOne Gold evaluation.
Building on the success of the original WaveOne reciprocating file, Dentsply Sirona added the metallurgical advancements of a gold thermal treatment as WaveOne evolved into WaveOne Gold. "I absolutely love WaveOne Gold. At this point in time, it is my favorite instrument!" said Bruce Schulman, DDS, one of many dentists who recently evaluated the files for DPS.
Cutting Efficiency
WaveOne Gold's 4 sizes cover a wide range of canal morphologies and feature corresponding guttapercha points, absorbent points, and obturators. A parallelogram-shaped cross-section improves cutting efficiency and debris removal.
"I love the characteristics of the metal used in WaveOne Gold. It cuts very efficiently," shared endodontist Blair Johnson, DDS. Dr. Alfred Klassen reported more consistent, faster results and said the files "cut very well and also draw out the debris rather than pushing it down." He added, "With confidence, I can instrument a canal and stay centered in the canal." Rodrigo Sanches Cunha, DDS, described the files as "fast, efficient and safe," and Dr. Landwehr noted, "The single-file design allows for rapid yet predictable disinfection of the root canal."
Some evaluators commented on the files' taper, lengths, and sizes, including Dr. Cunha, who said, "Introducing the medium file allowed me to reach a broader anatomy using this system." Dr. Michael Feldman recommended that the taper be reduced in the middle third of the file, while Dr. Landwehr noted, "The variety of file sizes and the simplicity of use of the WaveOne Gold system allows me to treat more complicated teeth in a predictable and repeatable manner."

Flexibility and Resistance to Cyclic Fatigue
Designed with an optimized cross-section, tip diameter, and taper, WaveOne Gold delivers optimal efficiency and greater flexibility while resisting cyclic fatigue and file separation. "I like that I can put a bend on the file to get it into the tight space," said Donnie Luper, DDS, who reported that the files did not break. Dr. Cunha noted, "The thermal treatment allowed the WaveOne Gold to be more flexible; file separation [was] reduced to almost zero," and Dr. Jason Wetmore lauded the files' excellent flexibility and resistance to separation.
Describing WaveOne Gold as excellent for treatment of S-shaped curvatures due to its increased flexibility, Dr. Schulman commented, "The file is efficient, maintainsthe canal shape, [and is] less likely to fracture." Dr. Landwehr shared, "The increased flexibility allows me to treat more complex root canal anatomies in a predictable way, and the increased cyclic fatigue resistance results in reduced risk of file separation and increased safety without making any change in clinical technique or usage."
Efficiency, Time Savings, and Patient Satisfaction
Use of WaveOne Gold allows most canals to be shaped with a single file, and this increased efficiency translates into reduced chair time. "The single-file shaping leads to increased efficiency," Dr. Landwehr noted. Dr. Feldman reported fewer total files, less stress during instrumentation of curved canals, and greater efficiency. Dr. Cunha remarked, "I have been able to do my endodontic treatment faster and in a more efficient manner," and Dr. Nayyer said the system "made endo safer, predictable, and saved valuable chair time." Dr. Luper agreed and said he has more time for irrigation, is able to complete the cases faster, and can offer more single-appointment dentistry.
"I have been able to reduce treatment time, need less inventory of files, [and I] like the look of the canal preparations," Dr. Schulman told DPS. "It cut down on the number of instruments I use, which simplifies things for both my chairside and supply staff," commented Dr. Johnson. When asked about the impact on patients, Dr. Klassen reported less post-treatment pain, and Dr. Schulman responded, "Due to increased efficiency, I feel that patients are happier not being in the chair as long. It's much more enjoyable to use fewer instruments to complete a procedure."

Overall Satisfaction
All of the evaluators said they would recommend the files. "WaveOne Gold files are so good that I use them routinely and would not want to be without them," said Dr. Klassen. Originally skeptical about adequately shaping and disinfecting with a single-file system, Dr. Landwehr concluded, "Due to the shape, predictability, and ease of use, WaveOne Gold has become my file of choice."
Takeaways
•Shaping the canal is faster and more efficient
•Files do not separate
•Files are flexible yet resistant to breakage
•Fewer instruments are required during a procedure
