BioRoot RCS is a bioactive, mineral-based root canal sealer with outstanding sealing properties.
According to Dr. Jimmy Chan, a cost-effective bioactive endodontic sealer is challenging to find, but Septodont’s BioRoot RCS met all his expectations in a root canal sealer. BioRoot allowed for rapid healing of periapical lesions with less post-operative discomfort, reported Dr. Chan, one of the dentists who tested BioRoot for this Dental Product Shopper evaluation. “The customized powder-liquid mixture provided a cost-effective option,” he added.
Another DPS evaluator, Dr. Michael Hansen, said it’s important for a root canal sealer to seal and prevent microbial leakage and growth. “The basic pH [of BioRoot] helps to kill bacteria that may remain in the canal and prevent future growth in case of leakage or failure of root canal therapy,” Dr. Hansen continued. “I am a fan of Biodentine and believe that I will have similar success with this product.”
A mineral-based root canal sealer designed for general or endodontic use, BioRoot is resin-free and gentle on the pulp and tissue. The product reduces sensitivity and pain, and will not stain teeth, according to the manufacturer. Each box contains enough material for 35 applications and includes a 15g powder bottle with 35 single-dose liquid containers.
Handling, Placement and Flowability
BioRoot is hand-mixed to fully control the final viscosity and reduce wasted material. Suitable for use in cold single cone or cold lateral condensation, the material flows effortlessly to fill auxiliary canals and easily coats root canal walls for smooth placement, according to Septodont. Many of the evaluators said BioRoot was very easy to use, including Dr. Henry Phillips, who said this “great product” allowed for easy application. Dr. Daniela Sever said the staff enjoyed using the product and found it very easy to work with.
Noting that he was comfortable using the product from the first patient, Dr. Michael Nelson said he would like to see the flowability improved. Dr. Tiep Tran concluded that BioRoot allows for simplified and more efficient root canals that result in increased profitability.
Working and Setting Time
BioRoot is formulated with an optimized working time of greater than 10 minutes and a setting time of less than 4 hours. “[There is] adequate working time,” noted Dr. Sever, and Dr. Nelson said the set time is convenient. Dr. Phillips said the material led to time savings and shorter appointments. Dr. Michael Alkon agreed, saying the easy cleanup decreased chair time and made for a more cost-effective treatment option. Praising the setting time, Dr. Tran said BioRoot resulted in a “much more efficient and enjoyable root canal treatment.”
Sealing Ability and Radiopacity
BioRoot incorporates a cold single cone or cold lateral obturation technique and ensures a strong, durable, void-free seal that tightly binds to dentin and gutta-percha points to prevent microleakage, reports Septodont. Dr. Sever said her patients received a good apical seal, while Dr. Phillips reported a good radiopaque seal. Dr. Alkon praised the material’s dense fill and said the product was critical for a successful out-come when there were curved canals.
In addition to a reliable seal, Septodont’s formula includes a unique Active Biosilicate Technology that reduces post-op sensitivity. Dr. Nelson shared, “Along with the high pH, post-operative pain seemed better than my current material. Several patients came in with significant pain and reported little to no post-operative pain.” Dr. Chan noted, “It is nice to see a more biocompatible product like BioRoot RCS that uses the powder-liquid format but is able to reduce the likelihood of post-operative discomfort.”
According to Septodont, the sealant’s hydrophilic nature allows the sealing process to continue even when moisture is present, and its high 5 mm Al radiopacity results in clear images on radiographs.
Dr. Edward Lew said BioRoot provided great radiopacity on x-rays with no post-op problems. His favorite feature is its ability to seal in a wet field.
Dr. Lew said a patient had a previous bad experience with post-op sensitivity after a root canal, and he was able to gain the patient’s gratitude with no post-op sensitivity this time. “[BioRoot] enabled my practice to continue its tradition of providing high quality of care with no to minimal discomfort,” Dr. Lew added.
Overall Satisfaction
All of the evaluators would recommend BioRoot to colleagues. Calling it a “great product that makes root canal treatment even more enjoyable,” Dr. Lew rated his overall satisfaction as excellent and said he would purchase the material in the future. Dr. Nelson, who said he has confidence that the material will seal canals and prevent growth, concluded, “BioRoot RCS is an excellent product.”
