As with any profession, dentists face many challenges in a typical workday. One clinical challenge unique to dentists is inadequate visualization of the posterior areas of the mouth, especially if there is insufficient lighting. While loupes and headlights help, a fiber-optic light on the dental handpiece can literally shine a light on this problem area, providing ample illumination and visibility in the oral cavity.
But not every dental practice is equipped with fiber-optic tubing and wires, and not every clinician wants to be tethered to a delivery unit’s fiber-optic system. Hoping to improve vision in the posterior without sacrificing power, cutting performance, or ergonomics, Dr. John Toccafondi said using the AirLight M800X “was a treat for us,” especially since his office didn’t previously have fiber optics. “The light emitted from the fiber optics improved visibility, and having the generator in the swivel makes it easy to add fiber optics to any office without wiring them up or using special tubing,” he added. “The small head, lightweight, and self-generating light make it a winner for me.”
Cutting Performance
With 27 watts of torque, the AirLight M800X handpiece operates efficiently for optimal precision cutting. Newly engineered X Ball Bearings last longer than other ball bearings while ensuring quiet operation, and IS (instant stop) Technology eliminates backflow and noise when ceasing operation. The Quattro Spray feature provides 4 specially positioned water ports for sufficient cooling.
After trying the AirLight M800X for a few weeks, Dr. Ryan Saunders was “happy with the amount of torque and smooth cutting with minimal noise.” He added, “The torque and cutting ability sped up the appointment, while the lack of noise was beneficial for both patient and clinician.” Although she found the noise level somewhat bothersome, Dr. Victoria Sullivan appreciated the torque, speed, ease of use, and overall performance, and Dr. Kristen Joyce said the handpiece was “efficient, lightweight, cut well.”
“I like the ability to feather and transition from high speeds to lower when needed,” shared Dr. Michael Micallef. Fiber-Optic Lighting
The AirLight M800X’s Direct-LED+ provides a large, bright (25,500 LUX) light pattern for a clear operative field. Appreciating that “the fiber optics are self-contained without the need for an external source,” Dr. Ricardo Ochinang, said, “The added light source provided greater visibility than the light from my loupes [and headlight] alone.” In fact, when the batteries on his headlight drained during a procedure, Dr. Ochinang was able to continue treatment with the light from the handpiece. Dr. Wilkin appreciated the light feature in the water spray, and Dr. Renieris said, “The fiber optics were brighter than my current handpiece.”
Ergonomics, Access, & Visibility
The lightweight AirLight M800X features a small head size for maximum visibility and a slip-proof Micro-Tex coating for improved grip. Hoping for a handpiece that provided better visualization and less stress on her wrist, Dr. Sullivan said it “worked beautifully and consistently” with good torque and minimal weight. Impressed by its feel and maneuverability, she said it was especially beneficial for full-mouth rehabilitation in pediatric patients.
“The generator that powered the light didn’t affect the ergonomics at all,” said Dr. Toccafondi, and Dr. Joyce appreciated the light weight of the handpiece. Calling it “a good middle size between my normal and mini size head handpieces,” Dr. Rupesh Singla found it valuable when treating a second molar on a patient who couldn’t open very wide. “I really liked its size and weight compared to the electric handpieces I currently use,” said Dr. Micallef, who praised the “small size to get into tight spaces.” On the other hand, Dr. Saunders would prefer a smaller head to make some posterior preps easier.
Overall Satisfaction
Calling the AirLight M800X a “solid performing, great value, high-speed handpiece,” Dr. Micallef said, “It’s a welcome change from my fleet of electric handpieces.” Dr. Kenneth Chae said the handpiece’s “efficient cutting and LED light make dentistry a bit easier,” and Dr. Ochinang said he would recommend it “to anyone looking for an alternative source of fiber optics without the need for maintaining the source from the delivery unit.” Dr. Sullivan concluded, “This handpiece will definitely be a workhorse for the practice with its small profile, high torque, easy maneuverability, and fiber optics.”
