As Dr. Cary Wagner puts it, “Handpieces are a tough buy. We need a bunch to make a practice successful, yet they are always so pricey for something decent.” Previously in search of “great, affordable handpieces that had power and felt good to the touch,” he found his solution in ProDent USA’s Revolve handpiece.
With a lightweight titanium casing and nonslip coating, the Revolve handpiece is designed with both durability and user ergonomics in mind. It is available in fiber-optic or non-optic models, including the option for a built-in, self-generating LED, and NSK or KaVo backing. The handpieces also come with a 2-year warranty on the casing and a 1-year warranty on the turbine.
“It has everything I need—great power, quiet, a great coating that makes it feel easier to hold, and it’s affordable!” Dr. Wagner said. “It is the best handpiece that I have used in years.”
Dr. Reem Mahjoub shared a similar perspective. “It solved every issue I have ever had with handpieces,” she said. “I appreciated an easy-to-use, self-illuminating handpiece that was at a reasonable price point. I ended up purchasing 10 of these handpieces for my practice.”
Power and Torque
The Revolve handpiece features ceramic ball bearings engineered to minimize wear and maintain lower operating temperatures, supporting speeds of up to 420,000 rpm and delivering 25 watts of consistent power.
Dr. Bryce Fenton was “looking for new handpieces” for his office, and following his review period, he said, “It is a very nice handpiece with plenty of power,” highlighting the torque as his favorite feature. Dr. Kenneth Chae said, “It has plenty of torque for efficient crown preps and existing crown removals,” adding that the product afforded “more efficient use of chair time.”
“For the torque and reliability, the Revolve handpiece is a great value,” said Dr. Mark Mendiola, who experienced “reduced stress by knowing that I have a reliable, well-performing handpiece that will cut efficiently.”
Dr. Kapil Kella said, “It cuts smoothly and with minimal chatter,” but he would have liked “a little more torque.” Dr. Nick Feola assured, “It runs smoothly,” and orthodontist Dr. Vincent LaBruna commented that the Revolve handpiece was “quieter and lighter” than his office’s existing handpieces. He also found it “very helpful for anxious pediatric patients.”
Adequate Illumination
For practices with an existing fiber-optic setup, the Revolve handpiece fits all standard 6-hole tubing and comes in KaVo and NSK backend options. And for those with a non-optic setup, the Revolve handpiece with self-generating LED allows for instant illumination without the need for a separate light.
Dr. Frank Siracusa previously struggled with “visualization in difficult areas,” but with the Revolve handpiece, “The light illumination is always a huge help, especially in the posterior region,” he said. “The ability to have illumination and see more detail as you work without any additional equipment is a game changer in terms of cost and time.”
“I don’t currently have a fiber-optic handpiece,” Dr. Feola shared, but during his review period, “it was nice having a handpiece with a light,” although he said the light was a little bit too bright at times.
“The LED light was an added bonus,” Dr. Chae said, also highlighting the value of having “LED illumination without the need for a built-in fiber-optic setup.” And for Dr. Mahjoub, “The self-generated LED light was very helpful. The increased visibility led to less eye strain as well as better access.”
Versatile Applications
Available in torque and mini head varieties, the Revolve handpiece ensures easy access to and visibility of the oral cavity during various clinical procedures. Dr. Fenton said, “Cutting through zirconia crowns was faster” while using this handpiece, and Dr. Chae recalled how it helped with the “efficient and quick removal of a failed restoration.”
“Generally, it was helpful in root canals to provide added illumination,” Dr. Mahjoub said, and Dr. Mendiola explained, “This handpiece provides the right amount of torque to prep teeth for crowns and composites.”
“I had a difficult crown prep on tooth No. 2,” another dentist reported, “and access and visualization with the LED light made a significant difference. [This handpiece] made working more efficient, and we were able to complete procedures quicker.”
Overall Satisfaction
Dr. LaBruna described the Revolve handpiece as “amazing” and “a long-awaited, welcome addition to dentistry.” Dr. Kella said it improved his chairside experience, offering “more efficiency and reliability,” and he appreciated “great customer support by the manufacturer.”
“[Until now], I haven’t been able to provide my doctors with more predictable, better-quality handpieces,” Dr. David Donelson shared, and Dr. Fenton concluded, “I liked it, and I will likely purchase some for my office.”
