Corded handpieces pose a variety of challenges for clinicians. For example, Samantha Cosgrove, RDH, who’s left-handed, said, “I temp a few days a week, and often offices are not left-handed friendly. I also have to lean over patients with the corded handpiece [the practice has].”
And then there are the common experiences of cord drag, weight, and the feeling of being “tethered to the tray table,” as Michelle Cunningham, CRDH, aptly described.
Enter Henry Schein’s new ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece, which “solved the cord issue and made for better ergonomics, especially as a left-handed provider,” Cosgrove explained.
Convenience and Portability
During patient care, clinicians must maneuver easily without feeling limited in their movements. No patient wants to feel the cord being dragged across their body or watch it get tangled in equipment. The ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece offers a solution to those challenges.
Excited that the handpiece would eliminate “cord drag and weight,” hygienist Maureen Curran discovered she could easily “access all areas of the patient’s mouth without a cord.” She added, “It made chair-side [care] easier, as my corded handpiece hose is shorter and catches on the chair’s armrest a lot.”
Other evaluators praised the portability of the ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece, including one who said, “I found the handpiece extremely useful when I needed to move between operatories due to its portability.” This same hygienist called it “lightweight and easy to use” and added, “The portability aspect is great, especially when working in my operatory with minimal space.”
Appreciating “the ability to pick it up and go without the use of the foot pedal,” Jessica Wells, RDH, said the quiet motor was helpful with fearful toddlers. In addition, she said having 3 nose cones allowed her to “use the unit exclusively and allow the rest of the practice to implement 3 older handpieces into rotation, thus allowing more available handpieces during the busy summer months.”
“I have a patient who can’t get out of his wheelchair, so I have to move my chair for him to get into my room,” hygienist Pat Brune shared. “My corded prophy handpiece doesn’t stretch all the way since he’s tall, so the ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece made it so much easier to polish his teeth.” She also said it was easier to maneuver and “follow wiggly kids around the chair.”
Battery Life
Although cordless handpieces offer the convenience of easy maneuverability, they sometimes present an issue with battery charge, especially in a busy practice seeing back-to-back patients. Once again, the ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece provides a solution with a long-lasting battery that fully charges in 65 minutes.
“I loved the extra battery and battery life,” said Tammy Sjurseth, RDH. Amy Corder, RDH, enjoyed the ease of charging the battery and said the charge lasts “at least 2 to 3 days.” Hygienist Mink Lee said, “It charged very quickly, and the charge lasted the whole day.”
Clinician Ergonomics
Weighing in at less than 113 grams, the ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece is designed for clinician comfort. Curran, who was looking for a handpiece to address cord drag and weight, described “the weight and diameter of the handpiece” as her favorite features. Lee called the handpiece “light and ergonomic, one of the lightest prophy handpieces I’ve used.”
Calling the handpiece “very easy to use and set up,” Cosgrove said, “The cordless feature allowed me to have less hand and wrist fatigue and better overall ergonomics.” She continued explaining, “It reduced wrist strain and the daily cord battle,” but Cunningham felt the handpiece was a bit heavy with “too much weight in the back.” Brune said, “The light handle made it easier to polish for a longer time.”
The ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece is equipped with 6 speeds and a high-output torque motor that maintains speed under pressure. Calling it “definitely the fastest and most powerful handpiece I’ve used,” Corder “loved the 6 speed options.” She also found that the handpiece is “great for patients with stain.”
Corder commented on the handpiece’s ease of use and various user-friendly features, noting, “The buttons are easy to press and accessible.”
Overall Satisfaction
The ACCLEAN Cordless Hygiene Handpiece was a lifesaver for Wells and her colleagues when an extra handpiece was quickly needed. She explained, “A handpiece malfunctioning in a nearby room was easily replaced with the cordless handpiece. No extra parts required. Just grab and go!” Cosgrove said she would recommend the handpiece to her colleagues because “it’s a quality handpiece that I believe they would enjoy using.”
