Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] Evaluation
Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] is a 2-step toothpaste system that strips plaque and whitens teeth.
The results are very pleasing. [My] teeth look great.” That’s what Donna Shewbert, a Georgia hygienist, had to say about Procter & Gamble’s Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] Daily Two-Step Toothpaste System after taking part in a Dental Product Shopper evaluation of the product.
The new Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] is a break-through in toothpaste, according to Procter & Gamble. After using the daily 2-step toothpaste system for 1 week, patients can achieve health and whitening improvements that are 6 times greater than they would achieve with ordinary toothpaste, according to P&G.
Our team of DPS evaluators, all dental professionals, recently used the Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] system on themselves for about 4 weeks and put that theory to the test.
Two-Step System
Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] is a cost-effective sys-tem that combines fluoride delivery and whitening in one and is easy for patient compliance, said North Carolina hygienist Mariola Steinbicker. “I particularly like the feeling following the gel. You can tell something is different from traditional tooth-paste,” Steinbicker shared.
A few of the evaluators suggested combining the 2 steps into 1, but the 2-step system is different for a reason—each step isolates key ingredients so they can focus on their separate jobs for improved results. Step 1, the Purifying Cleanser, strips away plaque and gives teeth a deep cleaning. Step 2, the Perfecting Gel, polishes and whitens teeth. Each system contains one 4.0 oz Step 1 tube and one 2.3 oz Step 2 tube.

Clean Feeling
The Purifying Cleanser, the first step in the Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] system, is formulated with stannous fluoride to help minimize plaque and reduce gingivitis for a healthier mouth. “My teeth felt very clean,” remarked Amy Lieberman, a hygienist who said the product is a good motivator for patients. Be-cause the product requires brushing for 1 minute with each tube, a patient will get used to brushing for the full 2 minutes as recommended just by following those instructions, Lieberman explained.
When asked what they liked best about Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD], one hygienist responded, “[I liked the] clean feeling following brushing,” and another said, “Easy to use, clean feeling.” Calling the product convenient, Shewbert shared, “The results are very pleasing. Teeth look great. I love to help patients find a product that works and is affordable.”
Stain Removal and Whitening
The second step in the Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] system is the Perfecting Gel. The gel uses hydrogen peroxide to provide additional whitening. “The whitening on my husband was significant!” said Edie Gibson, a dental hygienist from Edmond, OK, who shared her sample of Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] with her spouse. When we asked her why she wanted to participate in this evaluation, she said, “I wanted to see if the claims about whitening were indeed true. They were!”
Other comments about the whitening benefits of Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] included, “It brightened my smile,” “lt lightened my teeth slightly,” and “[I] noticed quickly how white they looked.” Michelle Jones said that she would definitely recommend the product to others.
“I like whitening toothpastes,” Lieber-man commented. “However, some are probably too abrasive to use multiple times a day. The HD paste and gel is good for patients who have some sensitivity but maintain with a good whitening daily system.” She added, “It could be an invaluable addition to our practice to recommend to our patients who have just had an in-office bleaching.”

Overall Satisfaction
The evaluators commented on a few features that were not covered in the official evaluation, including taste and sensation when brushing. For example, an Ohio hygienist, Debra Cavanaugh, said, “Pleasantly surprised on the taste and it did not cause any burning or sensitive teeth.” Lieberman shared, “The product had an appealing taste and maintained my color (which is already very white), appearing bright.”
Margaret Conrad, a hygienist in practice for 29 years, recommended Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] to her daughter, who has Crohn’s disease and sometimes suffers from gingival inflammation. She noted, “My daughter used it because her gums were sore. She told me it really helped soothe the irritation.”
The dental professionals who tested Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] for DPS agreed that the system leaves the mouth healthier and teeth whiter. Gibson, who rated her overall satisfaction as excellent, summed up her experience with the product by saying, “[I] loved the clean feeling and luster of my teeth and the improved appearance of my husband’s teeth!” Lieberman, who said she is likely to purchase Crest PRO-HEALTH [HD] in the future, concluded, “[It’s] invaluable because it's VERY GOOD!”
