Cavitron DiamondCoat

The Cavitron DiamondCoat combines superior adaptability, access, and design for faster, more effective calculus removal during periodontal surgery.

Cavitron Diamond inserts have been shown to provide improved efficacy in removing calculus from furcations while reducing the time needed to perform periodontal surgery.1 DENTSPLY Professional's DiamondCoat, from the Cavitron family of ultrasonic scalers, is a specialized ultrasonic insert intended for the following surgical applications: removal of tenacious calculus and amalgam overhangs, recontouring of restorations, and debridement of soft-tissue. According to the manufacturer, it enables more effective and faster calculus removal than traditional ultrasonic inserts, and greatly enhances scaling and root planing.

Cavitron Diamond inserts have been shown to provide improved efficacy in removing calculus from furcations while reducing the time needed to perform periodontal surgery.1 DENTSPLY Professional’s DiamondCoat, from the Cavitron family of ultrasonic scalers, is a specialized ultrasonic insert intended for the following surgical applications: removal of tenacious calculus and amalgam overhangs, recontouring of restorations, and debridement of soft-tissue. According to the manufacturer, it enables more effective and faster calculus removal than traditional ultrasonic inserts, and greatly enhances scaling and root planing.

This magnetostrictive diamond-coated ultrasonic insert provides clinicians with both superior adaptability and access during periodontal surgery. The insert fits all 30kHz Cavitron ultrasonic scalers, enabling easy practice integration.

Ten periodontists evaluated the DiamondCoat for this Dental Product Shopper review. They rated such features as access to the oral cavity, ease of use, and debridement ability.

Access to the Oral Cavity

Adaptability and access with the DiamondCoat are maximized by the insert’s shape and water-delivery system, which are the same as those of the TFI-10 insert. Access to the oral cavity was rated as excellent by 4 evaluators, as very good by 4, and as good by 2. When asked about visibility, 5 evaluators rated it as excellent and 5 rated it as very good. A Houston, TX periodontist noted that he “would much prefer a variety of shapes to improve access during surgery,” adding that this “is my only criticism.”A Denver, CO evaluator said the tip was “bigger than I would like,” and a periodontist in practice in Philadelphia said access to furcation areas “was excellent and somewhat better than with the piezo H3 tip.”

Ease of Use

Ease of use was rated as excellent by 5 evaluators, as very good by 4, and as good by 1. Two evaluators commented on the water flow; 1 said he “didn’t care for the water flow…but this could be due to our preference for FSI tips.” The other, who uses both the Cavitron SPS and piezo units, said the new diamond tip is “very good overall but still has a noise issue and needed higher water flow for cooling.”

Debridement

Diamond-coated ultrasonic inserts have been shown to remove calculus faster than hand instruments and plain ultrasonic inserts.2 According to the manufacturer, the diamond coating focused on the effective tip area means the DiamondCoat easily removes tenacious calculus.

Debridement with the DiamondCoat was rated as excellent by 5 evaluators, as very good by 3, and as good to fair by 2. Speed was rated as excellent by 6 evaluators, as very good by 2, and as good by 1. Four Pennsylvania-based senior periodontal residents who currently use the Cavitron SPS commented on the DiamondCoat’s debridement ability; 1 said “extending the diamond coating might be beneficial,” and another called it “better than the regular inserts.” Another in this group of resident-evaluators called it “superior in degranulation and debridement of infrabony pockets.”

Debridement was described as “excellent for the diamond tip” by another evaluator. A periodontist who currently uses the Cavitron 3000 and the Cavitron CaviJet described the DiamondCoat as “very good to excellent at removing the heavy calculus found while doing periodontal surgery.” A user of the 30K Cavitron said, “The debris removal and root planing ability of this insert is excellent.”

Overall Satisfaction

Nine evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend the DiamondCoat to colleagues, and 8 reported that they would definitely or probably purchase it. Overall satisfaction was rated as excellent by 3 evaluators, as very good by 5, and as good to fair by 2. One evaluator said he “enjoyed using the scaler and noted excellent results.”Another evaluator was “glad I’ve been introduced to this tip, and feel it will make my surgical interventions much easier.”
