Like most dentists, Dr. Sean Grady strives for perfection in all his dental procedures, but perfection is especially critical when taking impressions. After all, it’s the details in the impression that, in large part, determine the outcome of the restoration. Dentists are challenged to record those details accurately and consistently. While a task that might seem easier said than done, it’s entirely possible with the right impression material.

“For years I have been looking for an inexpensive hydrophilic impression material with a good consistency,” shared Dr. Grady, who recently found the perfect vinylpolysiloxane impression material in Henry Schein’s new VP Mix HP Max Hydro. “The light body is flowable but not too runny; the heavy body is firm but not too inflexible; the material does not adhere to or get stuck between the teeth, making it easy to remove from the mouth; the taste and odor are not offensive whatsoever; and the detail captured in the impression material is excellent,” described Dr. Grady.

Consistency & Setting Time

VP Mix HP Max Hydro comes in regular and fastset formulations of extra light body, light body, heavy body, and monophase, all with high-contrast colors and saturation. “The material worked consistently with every use, whether for the first impression taken with the cartridge or the last,” said Dr. Nicholas Nicosia, who appreciated the varieties in consistency but suggested more color contrast between the materials. Dr. Kent Caserta liked its “consistency, flowability, and patient acceptance,” and Dr. Rupesh Singla, who typically uses fast set, enjoyed the longer working time afforded by the regular set formula but suggested a smaller syringe for deeper access with the light body formula.

When asked what he likes best about VP Mix HP Max Hydro, Dr. Grady replied, “The creamy consistency of the light body allows the material to easily be syringed around prepared teeth without running. The result is a great impression.”

Impression Detail

“The detail captured in the impression material is excellent,” shared Dr. Grady, who explained, “With most impression materials, there is a ‘let’s hope it turns out well’ mentality while impressing difficult preparations or when there is a lack of total hemostasis. The VP Mix HP Max Hydro eliminates this anxiety because great impressions are the result nearly every time.” Dr. Rachna Surana agreed that “it records fine details well” and said she “got consistent results during crown placement appointments with minimal to no adjustments needed.” Dr. Pauline Lu said it produces “very good impression detail” under the gumline, and Dr. Singla noted, “The extra light body allows for more detailed impressions.” Praising the “great visual details,” Dr. Oleg Amayev said it was “helpful in all cases in which impressions were used.” Noting that he “was able to take an impression of a difficult area with great accuracy and no tears,” Dr. Nicosia concluded, “VP Mix HP Max Hydro excelled in mixing, dispensing, setting, and accuracy, and reduced the need to take a second impression.”

Patient Experience
