Futar Fast and Futar D Fast
A fast-setting silicone bite registration material that ensures a sturdy, accurate registration for virtually all indications
Fast is fine but accuracy is everything.” It’s been a century or so since Wyatt Earp coined this memorable phrase as his philosophy of gun fight survival. Fast forward to 2021 and he would be astonished to discover that his words ring true for something called “bite registration.” And, while not a matter of life or death, it’s a bite registration’s degree of accuracy that determines the quality of the resulting impression and the outcome of all that follows—from fabrication to final restoration.
Like the notorious Mr. Earp, dentists like Dr. Nicholas Nicosia understand that while accuracy is priority one, speed is sometimes essential. Hoping to find a bite registration material that was fast setting and sturdy, Dr. Nicosia tested Kettenbach’s Futar Fast and Futar D Fast for DPS and became convinced that accuracy and speed don’t need to be mutually exclusive. “Futar exhibited everything I was looking for in a bite registration material. The material sets within 1 minute and consistently gave me a sturdy registration,” he determined.
Futar Fast and Futar D Fast are 2 of 6 injectable elastomeric A silicone bite registration materials in Kettenbach’s legacy product line, offering optimal precision, exceptional final hardness, and working and setting times to accommodate virtually all bite registration indications.
Mixing & Dispensing
Futar Fast and Futar D Fast are dispensed with an economical short mixing tip that attaches to a 50-mL cartridge, which Dr. Rachna Surana said “makes it easy on the operator.” She said, “The bite procedure took only a few minutes and cleared up chair time for the practice” but suggested a “variety of flavors for the product.” Dr. Padmaja Mutyala appreciated the ease of dispensing and said it “decreased chair time for the assistant and the doctor,” when compared to other bite registration materials. Dr. Mina Back was especially impressed by the mixing tip, and Dr. Nicosia suggested a slightly smaller tip to help reduce waste.
Handling, Working & Setting Times
The Futar bite registration materials are easy to trim with a scalpel, yet they are highly thixotropic and remain in place on the tooth rather than flowing into interdental spaces. While the Futar family of products does offer regular set formulas, both Futar Fast and Futar D Fast feature fast set formulas with a 15-second working time and a 45-second intraoral setting time, which reduces distortion during setting, maximizes patient comfort, and translates into a registration that’s ready in only 1 minute.
Hoping for a “quick, accurate and consistent bite registration material,” Dr. Michael Marrone said Futar “worked consistently with regard to mixing, set time, and viscosity,” and Dr. Melissa Zettler described the material as “not too soft but also plenty rigid.” Noting that he really enjoyed using Futar, Dr. Nicholas Vece said, “The ease of handling and lack of runniness made it easier to use. The material was very accurate and stayed where it was placed.” Dr. Surana agreed that “Futar Fast and Futar D Fast both perform exceptionally well in terms of speed of set and final hardness.

Final Hardness & Accuracy of Registration
Dr. Vece found that “bite registrations were more accurate” with Futar and was especially pleased that he “had to take a bite registration only once.” Calling Futar a “nice firm material,” Dr. Raymond Lee said he “loved the final bite registration, [especially] the firmness when set.” Dr. Back said, “The regular and fast set material had a very firm final set, and the setting time was very fast,” and Dr. Zettler appreciated that “the material did not have much or any bounce.” When using Futar for a restorative case with multiple implants, Dr. Nicosia was able to take “a stable registration that the lab could easily work with,” which resulted in “less distortion and a much more accurate bite registration.”
Using Futar in a partial denture case with only a few posterior teeth on either side of the arches, Dr. Surana said, “The bite came out very predictably due to high final hardness of the product.” Dr. Michelle Na said the material’s rigidity was especially beneficial in full-arch cases when the master casts need to be mounted with articulators. “It’s very easy to trim the bite record with a sharp blade,” she added, and “it did not tear and was not brittle at all.” Stating that Futar “is very accurate and sets quickly without any distortion,” Dr. Pooja Saroha described it as “the best bite registration material on the market.”
Overall Satisfaction
Evaluator feedback was overwhelmingly positive regarding Futar’s ease of use, hardness, and accuracy, with Dr. Nicosa concluding that “it worked as promised,” and Dr. Lee calling Futar Fast and Futar D Fast “definitely great materials for any bite registration.” Describing Futar as an “excellent bite registration material with great accuracy and without breakage,” Dr. Saroha said she now “uses it for all my cases being sent to the lab.”
