According to the Organization for Safety, Asepsis, and Prevention (OSAP), ultrasonic cleaners can effectively clean dental instruments before they are sterilized. The Purit ultrasonic cleaning unit from Biotrol comes in 2 model sizes—1.5 gallon and 3.0 gallon—and it is designed with clean, smooth lines for easy cleaning.
According to the manufacturer, Purit ultrasonic cleaning units can hold more instrument cassettes than similarly sized units. In addition, both sizes of the unit are available in countertop or recessed models to fit any practice.
Eight dental offices from all over the country participated in this Dental Product Shopper evaluation of the Purit ultrasonic cleaning unit. The staff in these offices rated such items as ease of use, ease of draining and disinfecting the unit, and the unit’s ultrasonic cleaning action.
Ease of Use
The Purit ultrasonic cleaning unit was designed to be easy to use. All of the controls on the unit are easily accessible, including the drain knob and timer display.
The evaluators were asked to rate Purit on its ease of use—including the ease of turning the unit on and off, ease of setting the time, and ease of identifying the time remaining in the cleaning cycle. Four evaluators rated ease of use as excellent, and 4 evaluators rated ease of use as very good.
A dentist/physician evaluator from Ohio said, “The function display board and drain knob were up front and center. [It is] very easy to use this display.”
Several evaluators commented on the noise level of the unit. One evaluator described Purit as “much quieter than our present unit,” and another said, “I liked how quiet it was.” Five evaluators named noise level as the one item they would like to see improved.
Ease of Draining and Disinfecting Unit
Because the solutions in an ultrasonic unit must be drained and discarded every day, ease of draining and disinfecting an ultrasonic unit is important to overall ease of use. Many units are drained using a hose clamp, which can expose the dental professional to soiled ultrasonic solution. A drain knob is a more effi cient and effective way to drain an ultrasonic unit, but many manufacturers place them in diffi cult to view and access locations. Biotrol placed the Purit drain knob so that it is easy for the user to see and access.
Ease of accessing the drain knob was rated by 7 of the evaluators—as excellent by 4 and as good to fair by 3. Time to drain the unit was rated as excellent to good by 6 evaluators and as fair by 2.
When asked to rate the ease of disinfecting the Purit ultrasonic unit, 4 evaluators rated it as excellent and 4 rated it as very good.
Ultrasonic Cleaning Action
The ultrasonic cleaning action of Purit was rated as excellent by 4 evaluators and as very good by 4. Most of the evaluators named Purit’s ultrasonic cleaning action as the feature they liked best.
A dentist evaluator from Boulder, CO, noted that she was “very impressed with the ultrasonic action of the unit,” calling it “very powerful.” Another evaluator, whose overall satisfaction rating for Purit was very good, said the cleaning action was what she liked best about the unit.
Overall Satisfaction
Six evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend Purit to their colleagues, and 5 said they would defi nitely or probably purchase it.
At the end of the evaluation, the evaluators were asked to give their overall satisfaction rating of Purit. Five evaluators gave the unit an overall satisfaction rating of excellent or very good and 3 rated it good to fair.
One evaluator described Purit as “better than my current unit. Outstanding results.” Another evaluator said, “Overall, I liked this product and would recommend it.” A third evaluator, who gave Purit an overall satisfaction rating of excellent and indicated that she would defi nitely recommend and purchase the unit, said, “I must add that I like the Purit Ultrasonic Chemical Powder as well. It is very effective.”
