Every patient brings a unique blend of medical history, oral hygiene habits, and comfort needs to the appointment, which means dental professionals require instruments that meet patients wherever they are in their oral health journey.
That’s especially true for hygienist Lisa Juliana. “Working in a public health center, I see many patients who have never had their teeth cleaned or have had only infrequent cleanings,” she said.
That means she needs tools that are up to the task, regardless of a patient’s oral hygiene—and that’s precisely what Nordent provides with its OnPoint scalers and curettes. With innovative designs that optimize access and user comfort, these instruments start out ultrasharp and stay that way for easier, more effective scaling.
“I’ve tested many scalers, and these are by far the best ones that I’ve ever tried,” Juliana said. “Their sharpness allows calculus removal without a lot of pressure, which patients love, and they retain their sharpness after several uses.”
With that, Juliana found exactly what she had hoped for. “The Nordent OnPoint scalers and curettes have made prophy appointments much easier,” she said. “Even tenacious calculus comes off easily.”
Sharpness of Tips
Evaluators were clearly impressed with Nordent’s UltraSteel technology, which produces edges with long-lasting sharpness and strength.
“These were my go-to instruments for periodontal patients because the blades stayed sharp after several uses and didn’t require frequent sharpening,” said Mink Lee, RDH. Hygienist Nancy Shepard said, “The tip felt strong, the metal was very durable, and it was easy to sharpen and maintain a cutting edge,” and for Carrie Ohnstad, RDH, “OnPoint instruments were very sharp and smooth from the start and held their sharpness longer than other instruments.”
Design and Cleaning Effectiveness
Each hygienist selected 2 scalers and 2 curettes from OnPoint’s extensive instrument lineup, including TruGracey and traditional Gracey patterns. The scalers and curettes feature 10-mm handles with an exclusive satin finish, and are customizable with 2 interchangeable ColorRings on each end of the instrument for easy identification.
“I was happy with all the instruments and wouldn’t change any,” said hygienist Amy Lieberman. “They were all perfect for difficult patients.” She also appreciated the “easy access to lower anteriors and easy removal of subgingival calculus” and was “able to remove calculus on a patient for whom I was never able to thoroughly remove it before.”
“With the sleek tip design and sharpness, I was able to effectively remove hard-to-reach calculus from a pocket,” Donna Shewbert, RDH, recalled, while also lauding the thin blades and end/tip that were “easy to place subgingivally and adapt to the mesial and distal surfaces without catching the gingiva.” For Jennifer Collins, RDH, the instruments “adapted perfectly to almost every patient.”
“The blades’ sharpness produces outstanding tactile sensitivity, which allows me to explore subgingival surfaces and remove tenacious calculus without much effort,” Juliana said. Angela Reeds, RDH, loved the OnPoint posterior sickle scaler. “It made removing posterior interproximal calculus much easier,” she said.
Hygienist Becky McCarl described her tip as working “perfectly for posterior teeth and cleaning distal line angles on molars,” and Pamela Emard “loved the thin tip and accessibility to interproximals.” She added, “The knurling is perfect,” and named the grip and tip angle as her favorite features.
Clinician Comfort
The lightweight and balanced OnPoint instruments feature Nordent’s ControlRing Grip, effectively maximizing clinician comfort and reducing fatigue. The rings provide a secure grip while also allowing users to rotate the instrument freely.
Compared to other brands’ instruments, Collins described her chairside experience with OnPoint as more comfortable. “I loved the lightweight feel of the instrument, both in my hand and when scaling,” she added.
Amy Lindsey, RDH, said, “They were good quality instruments with comfortable handles and good color-coding options.”
Lee appreciated the balance and grip, finding their weight and strength effective for heavier cleanings, and Juliana said, “The swirled handle allows you to hold the instrument securely,” adding that the handle “reduces grasp fatigue.”
As someone who’s “always looking for new instruments that allow me to do my job more efficiently and that maintain their sharpness for a lengthy period of time,” Shewbert rated OnPoint as “excellent,” and Lieberman added, “If I can complete my job with ease, I’m able to work that much longer without body pain.”
Overall Satisfaction
While Collins has been a loyal user of another brand’s line of scalers and curettes, she is now “ready to try more Nordent” after evaluating OnPoint. Emard said, “It’s a downright good all-around product,” while Shepard concluded, “It’s one of the best instruments from Nordent. I felt like I had an extra trick in my pocket.”
