Palmero Healthcare’s Bryte-Syte Oralume disposable LED lighted mirror and transillumination system is designed to aid in oral diagnosis in general patient examination or detailed hygiene procedures. The product uses high-intensity, heatfree white light to illuminate the oral cavity and tooth structures. According to Palmero Healthcare, Bryte-Syte Oralume can assist in the identification of interproximal decay, hidden occlusal decay, root canal orifices, calculus, and tooth fractures.

Visibility
Each handle provides 1 lm of light. Although one hygienist evaluator praised the visibility, 3 of 4 evaluators found the light problematic. “The light was not useful for standard prophy, although the mirror and the light help slightly to see small cracks in teeth.” One evaluator indicated that the light was not bright enough for posterior visibility; however, another said that the light was “superior in the posterior because it got deeper into the oral cavity.” The Bryte-Syte Oralume uses high-intensity, heat-free white light without cables, heavy handpieces, or overhead adjusting.
Another hygienist found that the light got more diffused as she approached the anterior. “I would like to see the light brighter, more powerful,” she said. “Everything else was manufactured with good quality.”

Ease of Use
Ease of use was generally well rated, with positive comments regarding the product’s weight and comfort. “This is very comfortable, indeed a great attribute of this lighted mirror,” one evaluator noted. Another evaluator commented that the mirror heads kept turning around and made it hard to use for retraction, but another said that she thought the mirror “would be better if it was on a swivel.”
Ratings of the product’s usefulness for mobile practice and in cases of power outage were generally high. One of the 4 evaluators commented that the lights usefulness in a power outage “is the ultimate use for this lighted mirror. It ranks superior in a power outage.”

Instruction
To use the product, screw on any autoclavable cone socket mirror head (one is provided with the system) and then slip on the autoclavable transilluminator. When the light begins to dim (after about 20 hours), the disposable light handle is discarded and a new one can be used. The instructions and packaging were considered very good to excellent by all of the evaluators. One of the hygienists evaluating the Bryte- Syte Oralume said that the packaging is “handsome and easy to open” and that the instructions are “easy to ready and comprehend.”
According to the manufacturer, the light handle can be disinfected between patients by wiping it down with a surface disinfectant. One hygienist questioned this instruction: “OSHA sterilization requirements require that everything must be sterilized if it comes in patient contact, and the handle certainly does.” One of the evaluators overlooked the disinfecting instructions and placed the light in the cold sterilizer. The lights no longer worked after that.
