You need your face mask to be ultra comfortable, to fit perfectly, and to provide maximum protection. A bit of style to impress your patients also wouldn’t hurt. But how well do your masks actually perform?
Designed to provide what Medicom describes as “customized protection and luxurious comfort,” the SafeMask Master Series face masks offer supreme comfort, fit, and protection. Manufactured in the U.S. and available in 5 vibrant colors, the masks include ASTM levels 1, 2, and 3 and feature a soft inner layer and comfortable earloops.
“It offers top-notch protection with outstanding comfort,” said hygienist Angela Reeds, one of many dental professionals who tested the masks for this DPS evaluation. “I had no problems with fogging of my loupes and no rashes behind my ears! I had no idea a mask could be so comfortable.”
Comfort
After experiencing “scratchy masks and poor coverage,” Jessica Wells, RDH was pleased that the SafeMask Master Series masks “are very soft and stay put at the nose when placed.” Dr. George Dimitri shared, “It felt easier to breathe without feeling stuffy,” and Elizabeth Spindel, DMD, said the “softness and comfort were excellent” with these masks. “The mask is soft and the nose piece is soft and easy to manipulate,” said Julia Shin, RDH, who added, “They are not made with natural rubber latex, which was good for me since I have an allergic reaction to latex.”
Calling the softness “amazing,” Reeds said one of the assistants in her office declared, “It’s like velvet on my face!” She explained that several staff members “feel like other [level 3 masks] are suffocating, or they have sensitivity issues with the ear loops, rashes, or acne issues.” After testing the SafeMask Master Series masks, which are made with the highest-quality grade of nonwoven material, Reeds discovered that the masks do not collapse toward the mouth upon inhalation like some other masks. “They’re very soft, are non-irritating to the skin, and we had immediate relief from ear loop irritation and facial rashes and breakouts,” she said.

Fit/Adaptability
Manufactured with a unique pleating system and designed with zero size variance, the masks adapt well to the face to minimize gaps. The SafeMask Master Series masks “felt comfortably soft and molded well to the face,” said Dr. Gerald Rampton, and they are “small enough and flexible enough to fit closely to the face,” noted Donna Chuchla, RDH.
Regarding the earloops, Dr. Dimitri said the earloops were “a little snug,” while Wells thought the length was perfect. Commenting that some masks pull on her ears, Dr. Spindel said, “This one was perfect for me,” and added, “It was one less thing to worry about since it fits so well!” Although she found the earloops to be comfortable, Heather Locker, RDH reported, “The mask kept fogging up my glasses no matter how much I tried to pinch the nose piece.” Shin also had some trouble with her loupe/safety glasses fogging, while hygienist Kim Attanasi said they “felt very comfortable and did not fog my loupes.”
Protection
Designed to meet FDA requirements for Class 2 medical devices, the SafeMask Master Series masks are manufactured with automated machinery to prevent cross-contamination from manual manupulation. Dr. Frank Glushefski said the level 3 masks provided a “maximum protective barrier without compromising breathability.” He suggested offering the mask with an attached face shield as an option. Attanasi was looking for a mask that was “more comfortable while providing much needed protection from aerosols,” and said, “This mask was soft, form fitting, and provided protection from spatter and aerosols.” After evaluating the level 2 masks, Dr. Bennie Clark determined, “The masks are high quality; they make you feel really protected from airborne illness while being comfortable on your face.” Shin concluded, “It protected [us] from bacterial filtration and biological fluid.”

Overall Satisfaction
In addition to comfort, fit, and protection, the clinicians and their patients enjoyed the SafeMasks’ 5 colors - bright fuschia, vibrant green, radiant orchid, aqua marine, and royal blue. “Patients loved the colors,” shared Chuchla, and Dr. Spindel said both she and her patients thought the purple color was flattering. “It was a nice darker blue than usual – a nice change of pace,” noted Wells. “This product has satisfied the age-old needs that face masks of the last several generations have been unable to satisfy until the advent of SafeMask Master Series Face Masks,” Dr. Glushefski concluded.
