Calcification and difficult-to-negotiate canal paths can present significant challenges for clinicians performing root canal procedures. Finding a file system that efficiently and predictably removes calcium deposits and has the flexibility to proceed easily through the canal can boost treatment success as well as patient satisfaction.
Dr. Paul Kaplan was looking for a rotary endodontic system that would help him negotiate through thin and calcified canals. While evaluating SS White’s EXIMIA 7 files during this recent DPS product review, he found the cutting-edge file system allowed him to “successfully negotiate, clean, and shape all types of canals, including calcified ones.”
Additionally, Dr. Maliz Al-Grouz appreciated SS White’s PURE-Ca-SEAL bioceramic root canal sealer, highlighting its “great sealing ability and radiopacity” and deeming it a standout product throughout the evaluation period. Together, this product duo affords more efficient, minimally invasive endodontic treatments across the board.
File Cutting Efficiency
Available in 21-, 25-, and 29-mm lengths, EXIMIA7 files feature a parabolic cross-section to enhance cutting efficiency. The complete file system also includes matching paper and gutta-percha points.
Dr. Alfred dela Cruz described his existing rotary file system as “inefficient and having too many files and tapers.” With EXIMIA7, he "used only 4 files instead of my usual 12. The file flutes were usually filled with dentinal debris, indicating good cutting of infected dentinal tissue," he continued. "I finished molar RCTs nearly 20 minutes earlier, including a 20- to 30-minute hypochlorite soak.”
Dr. Al-Grouz was also impressed by the cutting efficiency of EXIMIA 7 files, and Dr. John Horn agreed, adding, “The files streamlined my technique from start to finish. They cut cleanly and efficiently and keep the canals patent.” Dr. Daniel Cohen, who said he was looking for “more efficient and less invasive instrumentation,” found that EXIMIA7 files “reduced time and conserved root structure.”
Dr. Alan Sedell said the file system offered an “easy file technique,” noting that he’d like the “file size rings to be a bit brighter to better differentiate sizes.”
Ease of Navigating the Canal Path
Designed with specialized heat-treated NiTi technology, EXIMIA7 files effectively balance strength and flexibility, which reduces shape memory, optimizes precision, and aids in the preservation of canal anatomy. The noncutting tips ensure precise guidance and centering of the files, and to meet demands for minimally invasive preparations, the files have a maximum flute diameter of 1 mm. They are also available in.04 and .06 constant tapers with variable pitch.
“The files performed well in a premolar canal with an apical curve,” Dr. Horn said. “They took a difficult procedure and kept it simple.”
Dr. Steven Berk was looking for a “straightforward rotary system that was easy to use and predictable” and described his experience with EXIMIA7 as “extremely easy." He continued, "It made the root canal procedures I completed go as smoothly as I could ask for," adding that he would recommend the file system to his colleagues and purchase it in the future.
“I was working on a tooth No. 14 with all buccal canals, which were calcified,” explained Dr. Kaplan. “By following the sequence of files, I was able to negotiate to all the apices successfully. They provided me with a more predictable outcome, even in the most challenging teeth.”
Dr. Peter Guirguis named flexibility and strength as his favorite features of the EXIMIA7 files, while Dr. Jason Wetmore said, “I found it to be a strong, flexible file that maintained existing canal anatomy. It allowed for efficient instrumentation and obturation of complicated molars using only 3 to 4 files.”
Canal Filling and Sealing
PURE-Ca-SEAL is a bioactive, readyto-use endodontic sealer that releases calcium ions to accelerate tissue remineralization. Its high pH and low solubility sufficiently seal the canal system and make it inhospitable for bacterial growth. This greatly simplifies obturation, minimizing chair time and maximizing patient comfort.
“The sealer will be on my purchase list,” Dr. Al-Grouz commented. Dr. Sedell said that he’d like the sealer to be “less runny,” but Dr. Berk said, “I really enjoyed the material and have now found my new root canal sealer.”
Overall Satisfaction
Dr. dela Cruz summed up his evaluation noting the “impressive selection of files, lengths, and most of all, cutting efficiency,” while Dr. Donald Roman said, “The sealer had very good properties. It worked well, it’s smooth, and it fills well," adding that his practice is "certainly considering" purchasing the material in the future.
“EXIMIA7 is easy to use and intuitive,” concluded Dr. Mark Edington, “and I like the fluid consistency of PURE-Ca-SEAL, which flowed nicely to coat canals.”
