Komet Jackie(4ZRS) Crown Cutter
Crown cutter is specifically designed to quickly and efficiently cut through adhesive-bonded all-ceramic crowns
Crowns that are fabricated from titanium and ceramic such as lithium disilicate are extremely strong, functional, and durable. However, when one of those crowns needs to be removed, it’s that very same strength that makes removal so difficult. To address the challenges of removing adhesive-bonded all-ceramic crowns, Komet added the Jackie (4ZRS.FG.016) to its line of highly efficient crown cutters.
Designed for optimal use on zirconia and other high-strength ceramic materials, the highly durable Jackie is uniquely engineered to slit crowns and bridges to simplify final fracture and removal with a hand instrument. The Jackie features a special diamond bonding for superior substance removal and greater durability when working on all-ceramic materials. A 4 mm length and tapered working end make it ideally suited for creating the lingual, occlusal, and buccal separating joints that are essential when removing adhesively bonded restorations.
Until recently, Dr. Elizabeth Spindel found that cutting zirconia was an arduous task. However, after testing the Jackie in her practice for this product evaluation, she reported that she now only needs to use this one bur for cutting zirconia. “It worked quickly and did not spark or produce heat,” she said. Steven Berk, DDS, said it allowed him to “cut through crowns in a timely and easy fashion while only having to use one bur per crown.” He determined, “This was one of the best burs I have used to cut through e.max and zirconia crowns.”
Cutting Efficiency
“Cutting crowns off is often cumbersome and takes time,” said Dr. Sharde Harvey. “This product solves this problem by making this task easier and much faster.” Dr. Spindel agreed and said, “This bur cut through zirconia very quickly and easily!”
Pointing out that the bur penetrates effortlessly through ceramic materials, Dr. Berk shared, “I had to cut off an existing zirconia bridge at the soldering joint, and the bur did an excellent job of allowing me to separate a single crown off the bridge.”
The bur “works very well and cuts very evenly,” said Steven Dater, DDS, and Dr. Trupti Nadkarni called it “very efficient without generating heat.” She added, “It cuts with minimal vibration or fracture of the crown.” Describing the Jackie as “a workhorse bur,” Dr. Sebastiana Springmann said she’d like to see a longer working length and different shapes.

Durability
When asked about durability, Dr. Springmann said the bur was “easy to use and lasted for several uses before needing to be disposed.” Hoping to find a bur that can cut through crowns without breaking at the shank, Tony Wu, DDS, discovered that the Jackie did not break and cited the strong shank as his favorite feature. “I felt more confident in cutting crowns,” he said.
Time Savings
When asked about time savings, the evaluators reported overwhelmingly positive feedback. “I was able to remove an old zirconia crown much more quickly in comparison to the burs I had been using,” said Dr. Spindel, and Dr. Nadkarni told DPS, “It cuts chair time in half.” Describing the cutter as “a great time-saving asset,” Dr. Todd Gottlieb was pleased that he was able “to remove a bridge of zirconia and did not have to use 3 different burs to remove it.”
Dr. Dater said the Jackie saved time while sparing him the cost of multiple burs, and Thomas Morgan, DDS, said it provided quicker, easier crown removal. “It impacted my practice by allowing me to schedule the patients for less chair time, saving me time and money,” said Dr. Berk. “Any time we can decrease chair time to help the patient have a pleasant experience is a plus,” noted Dr. Harvey. Calling the bur “much better than previous burs I’ve tried,” she described a case involving a challenging patient who needs to be worked on at a 45-degree angle. With this patient, “the fact that this was quicker and easier really helped a lot,” she said.

Overall Satisfaction
All of the evaluators said they would recommend the Jackie 4ZRS to their colleagues and most said they would purchase the bur in the future. Dr. Dater called it the “best bur I have used,” and Dr. Berk said he will tell his fellow colleagues how great this bur is and how efficient it is. “It is much better than other crown cutting burs [because it] cuts through crowns with better ease and it’s much faster,” Dr. Harvey noted. “I would absolutely recommend this product as perhaps the best bur currently available for cutting crowns off,” she concluded.
