TurboTemp EZ Evaluation

TurboTemp EZ quickly self-cures to a high strength and hardness, resulting in durable and esthetic temporary restorations

TurboTempEZ from zest dentalWhen you hear the word “turbo,” you may think of an extremely powerful car engine, a sudden burst of speed, or, in the dental world, maybe a highspeed handpiece. But is it possible to have a turbo-charged provisional material that reaches a high strength and hardness in record time? Zest Dental Solutions believes it is with its TurboTemp EZ, a temporary crown-and-bridge material that Zest says reaches up to 5 times higher strength in the first 10 minutes than many leading brands.

When Dr. Cristian Secareanu put TurboTemp EZ to the test in his practice, it passed with flying colors. “TurboTemp EZ consistently set faster than my previous temporary materials, had great esthetics, and had the strength needed for a temporary bridge or crown,” he said. Even when fabricating a 6-unit anterior temporary bridge, he said TurboTemp EZ was easy to handle and polish, set quickly, and caused no problems, resulting in an ideal clinical outcome and smiles on both sides of the chair. “It gives me confidence to know that TurboTemp EZ is there for me to use, even in the most difficult cases,” Dr. Secareanu added.

Working & Setting Time

Suitable for fabrication of long- and short-term provisional restorations, including veneers, inlays/ onlays, crowns, partial crowns, bridges, and longspan bridges, TurboTemp EZ is dispensed in a 1:1 cartridge with mixing tip, which Dr. Elizabeth Spindel said is a “convenient, nice delivery system.” Dr. Agnes Knobloch praised the material’s “great flow,” and Hana Rashid, DDS, said it was “easy to work with, user friendly, with a good working time.” According to Dr. Bhavit Sheth, the 45-second working time “is appropriate for long spans but for single units it seems slower,” and Dr. Marisol King said she would like a longer working time.

TurboTemp EZ features a predictable setting time of less than 5 minutes, which was Dr. Secareanu’s favorite feature. Calling it “super easy to manipulate,” Dr. Leo Huck said his assistant was very impressed by how fast it set, and Dr. Knobloch said the setting time was great.

Strength & Hardness in Working Stages

TurboTemp EZ quickly self-cures to a high strength and hardness, which makes it very durable during the working stages. Deformation or shrinkage is minimized, and the temp can be trimmed without breakage, even at the margins.

“I love it for single crowns, inlays, and onlays,” said Dr. Knobloch, and Dr. King said she was very happy with the strength of the material. “The hardness was impressive,” shared Dr. Huck. “Even when we used it for a temp bridge, the hardness was really good.” When using TurboTemp EZ for bridges, Dr. David Martin said, “The hardness held up well during the temporization period. I was able to trim easily, allowing quicker completion.” Hoping to find “a less brittle bis-acryl for temps that can be polished easily without a glaze,” Allan Mohr, DDS, was ultimately impressed with TurboTemp EZ. Calling it very durable and harder than other materials, he was pleased to “finally find a temporary material that does what the company advertises.”

Ease of Removal, Final Fit, & Esthetics

While several evaluators commented on TurboTemp EZ’s ease of removal, 2 dentists said it was difficult to remove the hardened material from the teeth, with one having to cut off the prep. Listing “ease of removal” as her favorite feature, Joy Poskozim, DDS, said TurboTemp EZ improved marginal integrity and is good for long-term temps.

With 6 essential shades – A1, A2, A3/3.5, B1, C3, and bleach – lifelike fluorescence, and high polishability and gloss, TurboTemp EZ produces esthetic provisionals that enhance patients’ smiles. “The material is versatile and provided excellent polishability and appearance in anterior cases,” noted Dr. Sheth. “Shade A2 had nice camouflage properties, and the temps seemed to stain less than with previous materials.” Dr. King said the color match and consistency was good, and Dr. Rashid called it “easy to polish for a great esthetic finish.” Suggesting that it would be nice to have D shades, Dr. Mohr commented, “The polishability and the margins are very easy to capture without having to add flowable composite.”

Regarding the final fit of the restoration, Dr. Martin said, “The fit of the temporaries was excellent,” and Dr. Rashid said it fit nicely after she fabricated a temporary bridge on the spot. Kalpesh Mehta, DMD, said TurboTemp EZ worked great for a 10-unit temporary fixed partial denture and said, “It had great strength, polished nicely, and the patient was happy with the esthetics.”

Overall Satisfaction

“There are many temporary products on the market, and I found this to be one of the better products,” shared Dr. Martin. “It’s easy to use, strong for fixed bridge restorations, and makes the temporary process a little quicker.” Dr. Mohr agreed that TurboTemp EZ reduced chair time, especially in veneer cases, and Dr. Secareanu said, “I would recommend it to all colleagues. The quality is definitely there.”
