PerioPatch forms a protective seal over inflamed gingiva and irritated oral tissues, providing protection from further irritation caused by normal activities, such as eating and speaking. Twelve evaluators (7 dentists and 5 hygienists) with a combined 293 years of experience participated in Dental Product Shopper?s evaluation of PerioPatch. Evaluators rated features including usefulness in trauma, ease of use, ease of integration, and effectiveness.
Usefulness in Trauma
PerioPatch is a hydrogel dressing that consists of 2 parts: an outer backing and gel layers. The patch absorbs wound exudates and effectively keeps out possible irritants that could aggravate the wound, so the patient can function with less discomfort. The physical barrier created by PerioPatch also can protect oral mucosa from additional trauma caused by braces, dentures, or other intraoral appliances. Regarding usefulness in trauma from dental appliances such as orthodontic and removable partial dentures, PerioPatch was rated as excellent by 5 evaluators, very good by 3, and good by 4. An evaluator from Georgia said, ?The patch seemed to cover a trauma injury easily and help reduce the inflammation surrounding the wound site.? A hygienist evaluator with 27 years of private practice experience said that PerioPatch is ?great for denture patients as well as for patients undergoing periodontal therapy.?
Ease of Use and Integration
According to the manufacturer, PerioPatch is easy to use. After identifying the affected area, the patient should be advised to swallow and then attach the lighter side of the patch directly to the affected area. The outer backing of the patch will loosen and dislodge after an hour or 2. It can then be removed. The underlying hydrogel dressing will remain on the oral tissue for the next several hours. Ease of use of PerioPatch (for clinician and patient) was called excellent by 5 evaluators, very good by 3, and good by 4. One evaluator stated that, ?It was not quite as easy to use as I thought it would be,? but another evaluator stated that the ?product is very easy to use and is very easy for patients to understand.?
Effectiveness
According to MIS Implants Technologies, in clinical practice, the most effective usage for oral wound management is the application of 3 patches within the first 24 hours, followed by the application of 3 additional patches as needed on subsequent days. The patch forms a protective seal over the affected gingiva and oral mucosa, providing relief from pain while promoting natural healing. In evaluating the effectiveness (in relieving localized signs and symptoms of inflammation) of PerioPatch, 2 evaluators rated it as excellent, 8 as very good, and 2 as good. A dentist evaluator from Utah said, ?In every case, the healing was accelerated over anything I have seen in the past.? The same evaluator went on to add that ?1 patient received an immediate denture 3 years ago for
the maxilla and last week for the mandible. He said he was surprised, that this wasn?t anything like he expected. The next day when he took the denture out, the extractions looked healed.?
Overall Satisfaction
Regarding overall satisfaction with PerioPatch, 5 evaluators called it excellent, 5 very good, and 2 good. When asked if they would like to see anything improved about this product, an evaluator with 15 years of private practice experience said, ?Nothing. In fact very innovative, and I have never seen any product like this before.? A hygienist evaluator with 18 years in practice who gave PerioPatch an overall satisfaction rating of excellent said that her ?patients were extremely pleased.?
