It’s no secret that most patients do not enjoy going to the dentist, especially when treatment involves a dreaded injection or any type of extraction or surgery. Recognizing that a dental visit is not going to be on any patient’s bucket list, dental professionals generally devote considerable time and effort to making patients as comfortable as possible. One way they can do this is by using Septodont’s OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel, an all-natural hydrogel wound dressing that relieves postop pain while optimizing wound healing and improving patient outcomes.
After adopting OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel in his busy practice, Dr. Alan Pressman said that even his most anxious patients “have experienced reduced postop issues with the use of OraSoothe ‘Sockit,’ which has helped them greatly.” He also appreciates having a safe alternative to prescription and over-the-counter medications for pain management and wound healing. “I haven’t needed to prescribe narcotics after extractions since using OraSoothe ‘Sockit’ Gel,” Dr. Pressman noted. In fact, he reports that the frequency of post-extraction dry sockets and complications has dropped from 5% to 1% since introducing the gel to his patients, and he has seen “fewer postop issues after many procedures.”
Pain Management & Healing
OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel is ideal for use after multiple procedures and for injuries of the oral mucosa. DPS evaluators used the gel for a range of indications, including pain management and dry socket prevention after extractions, implants, bone grafting, SRPs, and in gingival graft donor and recipient sites.
Several evaluators saw a reduction in the need for pain medication when using the gel.
“OraSoothe ‘Sockit’ Gel’s efficacy for reducing pain is demonstrative,” said Dr. Charles Kattuah, who explained, “All but one patient experienced less post-extraction pain/discomfort.” For Dr. George Jones III, “OraSoothe ‘Sockit’ seemed to reduce postop discomfort and dramatically sped up healing” after immediate dentures and extractions. Describing the incidence of postop complaints after applying the gel as “much lower” than before he began using it, he said, “Most patients asked for a second syringe.” Dr. Rick Adelstein’s patients “seemed to have less post-extraction pain,” and Dr. Steven Edidin noticed “better post-extraction socket healing” and said the gel “worked well when patients complied.”
Dry Socket Prevention
Some evaluators compared the incidence of dry sockets and other complications before and after using OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel, and reductions ranged from 2% to 5%, with several dentists reporting no complications when the gel was used. After undergoing extractions on both sides of the mouth, one of
Dr. Gary Chike’s patients tested OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel on only one side the day after surgery. The patient told Dr. Chike, “I could tell the difference right away, so I put it on both sides. What a relief!”
For Dr. Michael Pavelchek, the gel reduced inflammation and promoted healing after extractions and SRP, and it “reduced soreness” for his patients. Dr. Pressman used a patient’s double extraction sites to compare his usual topical dressing to OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel. He noticed, “The site treated with ‘Sockit’ Gel healed faster, and there were no postop issues.”
Ease of Use & All-Natural Formula
A unique syringe design with a curved tip ensures placement exactly where it’s needed. In addition to using OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel in the office, patients are instructed to take a syringe home to use during the postop healing process. Patients simply apply enough gel to coat and cover the wound site, and any excess can be safely swallowed.
Several evaluators described the gel as easy for patients to use, including Dr. Chike, who said, “The delivery mechanism allows patients to dispense it as needed without waste.” Dr. Hatem Abdelhadi was impressed with the ease of placement, and Dr. Edidin found the packaging helpful for dispensing to patients. One of Dr. Pressman’s patients called it “a great product and easy to apply.” When asked about improvements, Dr. Pressman suggested slightly more viscosity to prevent sloughing out of the treatment area.
Made from only 6 all-natural, food-based ingredients —including mannose polysaccharides from aloe vera, xylitol, and small amounts of essential oils of cinnamon, clove, and thyme—OraSoothe “Sockit” Gel is safe for patients of all ages and has a pleasant fragrance and taste.
Dr. Jones appreciated being able to offer localized pain relief rather than conventional pain medications. Since evaluating the gel, Dr. Adelstein said, “I will now start to seek out products with all-natural ingredients.”
