There’s a lengthy list of ingredients that make up the puzzle of a successful endo procedure— everything from flexible NiTi files and apex locators to bioactive sealers and gutta percha. But there’s another piece of the puzzle that tends not to grab many headlines, even though it is an essential part of endo therapy—the delivery of irrigants.

Studies have shown that irrigants display stronger antibacterial capabilities and enhanced tissue dissolution properties when they are ultrasonically activated post delivery. The Vista Apex EndoUltra is a cordless device that provides ultrasonic energy to intercannular solutions and quickly enhances the cleansing of challenging anatomy.

Effective Irrigation is Crucial

Understanding the necessity of effective irrigation during his root canal procedures, Ryan M. Walsh, DDS, MS, an endodontist in Keller, TX, began using EndoUltra about a year ago, and so far he’s found it to be an effective technique for dentin debris removal during his endo therapy. “We know that ultrasonic provides some of the best opportunities for activation, or what I refer to as adjunctive irrigation,” Dr. Walsh explained. “So, if you’re going to have one product in your office, EndoUltra would be a great one to have,” he continued, “because a clean root canal system can lead to more successful treatment outcomes.”

Powerful Tip Frequency

EndoUltra is capable of generating a tip frequency of 40,000-50,000 Hz, a rate that is 200 more times powerful than sonic devices. This high tip frequency is needed to create enough acoustic streaming and cavitation for effective cleaning of the canals. The compact and cordless EndoUltra significantly improves debridement, reduces bacteria levels, disrupts biofilm in canal spaces, and allows irrigants to penetrate into dentinal tubules to remove vapor lock, ensuring a faster, more efficient cleaning during endo procedures.

“In my hands, this is a 1-trick pony,” Dr. Walsh explained. “It ultrasonically stimulates or activates my irrigants, and so toward the end of a procedure, as I’m getting ready to do my final rinses, I use this to help the irrigants work more effectively to clean the canal system.”

Portable & Durable

For Dr. Walsh, the EndoUltra has several advantages over what he was previously using for irrigation, most notably its portability, charge longevity, and durability. “As an endodontist, I’m using ultrasonic activation on every case, so I like that it’s mobile and very portable, without cords to worry about, and it holds a long charge, so I’m not going back and forth to charge the device in between my appointments,” he explained.

Additionally, EndoUltra features enhanced activator tips made of highly durable titanium for increased flexibility and power. “I also like that the tips are very robust and sturdy and I don’t feel like I’m going to break or fracture a tip somewhere that might be difficult to retrieve,” he added.

A one-of-a-kind device, the handheld EndoUltra uses a bright LED light and a contra-angle design for increased accessibility. “It’s handy, user-friendly, and easy to operate—I just push a button!” Dr. Walsh added. “There’s zero learning curve and I just take it from operatory to operatory with me all day.”
