Color, translucency, strength. Vincent Devaud, CFC, MDT, MSD, owner and master ceramist to the stars at Boutique Dental Laboratory in West Hollywood, CA, achieves all 3 of these benefits for the dentists he works with—and their patients. His multilayer zirconia of choice? LayZir All Indication Zirconia from Smart Dentistry Solutions, which allows him to create beautiful veneers, crowns, bridges, and implant restorations.

“LayZir is a great material because it has incredible technology built in, which provides strength and natural esthetics,” Devaud explained. “Its 5 layers of porcelain offer seamless color and translucency transitions.”

The multidimensional gradation technology behind LayZir blends 3Y and 5Y zirconia to provide exceptional strength as well as high-level esthetics. “It has all these added benefits—color, translucency, and incredible strength,” Devaud said.

Layer by Layer

LayZir delivers 44% translucency in the enamel layer, which makes it an ideal material for anterior cases, as well as a flexural strength of 1,030 MPa in the occlusal and incisal areas to reduce stress on opposing dentition.

The transition layers are built around Smart Dentistry Solutions’ proprietary microstructure technology with multidimensional gradation—a technology that ensures the restoration transitions seamlessly from opaque in the cervical to translucent in the incisal. For example, “The 1M1 transitional shade can be hard to find in other systems, but LayZir includes it for a more natural and realistic final restoration,” noted Devaud.

He describes LayZir as having a new generation of colors embedded into the zirconia disc. “The lower layer—which is the base of the disc—has the strongest properties,” he explained. “When we place the restoration that’s been designed digitally inside the disc to mill it, we can choose if we want more incisal or less incisal. We also can choose whether we want more or less strength.”

Devaud, who’s been providing custom fixed restorations for over 35 years, has tested many materials in his lab, where he creates high-end restorations for patients from around the world as well as celebrities working in Hollywood's entertainment industry.

“LayZir is the best-performing material I’ve seen thus far,” said Devaud. “For me, it’s a value proposition. Ceramics can be microlayered with precision, allowing for internal characterization if needed to modify and stay within a natural range of color. It’s fantastic!”
