Always Sharp, Always Ergonomic

With extremely thin blades that don’t need to be sharpened, XP Sharpen-Free instruments are lightweight, efficient, and ergonomic—taking the pressure off scaling and root planing

In life, comfort is rarely associated with sharpness. But that’s exactly what American Eagle’s XP Sharpen-Free scalers and curettes provide to the hygienists and dentists who use them day in and day out.

XP Technology is not a coating, but a patented surface engineering process that enhances the metallurgical composition of the instrument’s surface—giving it the properties of a more durable and significantly harder material and creating a sharp edge that eliminates the time-consuming and imperfect process of resharpening instruments.

Over the years, several XP Sharpen-Free instruments have been put to the test by DPS evaluators, each time emerging as DPS Best Products thanks to their ergonomic design and built-in sharpness. Here are 2 examples:

Boge 513: Creating Happy Hygienists

Designed with XP Sharpen-Free technology, the Boge 513 modified sickle/hoe scaler is designed to maximize efficiency, access, and comfort during scaling. Designed by Emily Boge, EdD, RDH, CDA, the instrument has razor-sharp edges that stay sharp longer than any other stainless- or carbon-steel instrument.

“It reduces chair time, makes me a happier hygienist, and gets the job done quickly without added pressure on my wrist and hands,” said hygienist Sherry Morrissey after trying the sharpen-free Boge 513 in her practice for several weeks. “I can get difficult stains off because of the super-sharp edge of this instrument. I would definitely recommend it to anyone having wrist or hand issues from heavy scaling.”

The Boge 513’s hoe end is designed for marginal recession and posterior areas with exposed root surfaces, areas with fixed orthodontic wires, and upper and lower anterior regions; while its Nebraska 128 sickle end is designed for interproximal contact areas and patients with crowding or recession. “The sickle end was slim, sleek, and easily applied to narrow areas, and the hoe end was able to shave the calculus away effortlessly,” shared Kristi Evansen, RDH.

Pro Thin: Sharper & Thinner

Also made with XP Sharpen-Free technology is the Pro Thin line of periodontal instruments, which feature thinner, razor-sharp blades and lightweight handles that greatly improve access when treating periodontally inclined patients. When a group of dentists and hygienists tried out 4 Pro Thin Gracey Access instruments in their practices, the feedback was glowing, with one DPS evaluator, Dr. Kim Gandhi, sharing that they were the best instruments she’s ever used. “I love that I don’t need to sharpen them, and they’re great for perio scaling and root planing,” she added.

The thin blades of the Pro Thin instruments enable easy access to periodontal pockets and interproximal areas, along with a longer shank and optimal angulation. Because the instruments are always sharp, they require a lighter grasp and only slight pressure to plane away calculus and tartar. “They are very good at reaching deeper periodontal pockets and are very lightweight,” noted hygienist Sara Solberg, while Dr. Amy Fuller said, “The instruments are very light, easy to adapt, and survive multiple uses without needing refinement.”
