Prosthodontist and master ceramist Dr. Robert Winter on 4 decades with Brasseler—and why electric handpieces earn a permanent place in his armamentarium

As someone who lectures to other clinicians on an international stage, Dr. Robert Winter was first exposed to electric handpiece motors in the early 1990s—before they were common in the U.S. Even back then, it was clear to him that electric handpieces simply outperformed traditional air motors. He decided to make the switch, and he's never looked back.

Electric motors offer a variety of benefits over air turbines, he said, with higher efficiency, higher torque, enhanced performance, and reduced noise chief among them. The bur spins more concentrically than when using an air turbine, allowing greater precision.

Boasting a powerful torque of 4.2 Ncm and the ability to handle endodontic procedures, Brasseler’s Forza ELXT E Micromotor is the latest addition to his armamentarium.

“The handpiece torque with the Forza is one of the highest, if not the highest, on the market,” he said. “The torque is even and consistent with all the attachments, including the 1:1 friction grip and the 1:1 latch."

New handpiece motor systems like the Forza ELXT E feature ceramic bearings, Dr. Winter said, and that translates into less wear. They’re also self-cleaning and feature a Safety Check Function that reduces the risk of overheating.

What really sets the Forza motor apart, though, Dr. Winter said, is its "predictability and durability." Its reliability is essential for dental professionals who depend on these tools in their daily practice.

“I also use it for cutting off old restorations,” he said, “because of the high continuous torque of the handpiece. It can be used to cut through any material, which is a significant advantage over other air turbine handpieces.

Meet the Forza+ Attachments

A variety of attachments are available for Forza electric motors, including the Forza+ X1, a 1:1 gear ratio electric latch attachment that has a lightweight, solid titanium body. Used with latch burs, the X1 is used at speeds between 2,000 to 40,000 rpm, depending on the procedure being performed. Throughout the speed range, torque remains consistently high, which is essential for maintaining efficiency.

Dr. Winter uses the X2 1:1 friction grip attachment to refine and smooth preps. “Whether clinicians are scanning teeth or taking physical impressions, they need a very sharp, crisp finish line for accurately fitting restorations,” he said. “With a maximum speed of 40,000 rpm, you can maintain control of the preparation refinement. So, rather than being concerned with over-prepping, it’s easy to smooth and refine the prep. The Forza+ X2 should be the handpiece of choice to adjust all direct and indirect restorations, including ceramics and all types of zirconia. The speed for these procedures will range from 20,000 to 40,000 rpm depending on the material being adjusted."

Dr. Winter uses the Forza+ X5, a 1:5 ratio speed-increasing electric attachment for tooth preparation, which achieves speeds of 200,000 rpm.

Restoration surfaces also need to be polished, and Dr. Winter does that with the Forza M1, a 1:1 ratio latch handpiece in Brasseler's short attachment series. Its 8.9-mm head diameter is ideal for improving access and visibility during polishing.

The Brasseler Promise

At 3 years, Brasseler offers one of the best warranties on the market, Dr. Winter said, and that’s significant. Dentists who invest in Forza micromotors like the Forza ELXT E and the various attachments know they’re getting high-quality tools they can rely on.

“I’ve never had any problems with this handpiece,” Dr. Winter said. “They are incredibly reliable and durable, and it's reassuring to know that Brasseler stands behind its products."
