Blu-Mousse Bite Registration: A VPS that Delivers

Reliability and consistency are the keys to accuracy

Since its introduction 20+ years ago, Parkell’s Blu-Mousse has been a leading product for taking bite registrations and creatingblu-mousse box matrices, model bases, and orthodontic appliances. As more and more dental offices go digital, clinicians will be excited to learn that impressions taken with Blu-Mousse also can be digitally scanned, making this traditional analog favorite a digital go-to for more accurate articulations.

Let’s Count the Ways

When looking to capture the most accurate bite registration for crowns, clinicians choose Blu-Mousse for a number of reasons. It stays stacked on the occlusal surface during placement and, depending on the set time, will harden to a plaster-like final set with a durometer of 90 within 30 seconds (SuperFast) to 2 minutes (Classic). The durometer is key to the reliability of Blu-Mousse because anything lower leads to articulation errors. Blu-Mousse breakage when it’s removed from the patient’s mouth and it doesn’t distort from the time the bite is taken to when the lab uses it to articulate the models.

Patient and Practice

Win Dr. David Fang, who practices in Salem, MA, has been using Blu-Mousse since it was first introduced and he can’t imagine practicing without it. “I needed something that would give me a reliable bite that the patient could comfortably set into without any strain. So I use BluMousse as the wash material in conjunction with a light bodied VPS when doing larger prosthetic cases,” he said. “There’s no distortion of the impression. It’s very stable.”

The material’s fluffy, light consistency allows patients to passively bite down without feeling resistance, creating a more accurate index of their natural bite. This is important because an accurate occlusal registration will mean a smoother process— from crown creation in the lab to insertion in the patient’s mouth. Crowns that require no (or minimal) occlusal adjustment are a win-win for everyone.

Blu-Mousse is primarily used for occlusal bite registrations but also can be used as a matrix for fabricating direct and indirectblue-mousse items provisionals as well as a rigid base for Mach-2 VPS die and study models. In addition, it’s scannable, making it invaluable for digital compatibility.

Choice and Consistency

Blu-Mousse comes in 3 times: 30 seconds, 60 seconds, and 2 minutes. Dr. Fang prefers the 2-minute set because “there’s plenty of time to work, but adequate onset of cure.” Clinicians can choose the setting time that works best for the task, while knowing that the product still performs the same with regard to accuracy and hardness. “As long as I’m in practice, I’ll continue using Blu-Mousse,” Dr Fang concluded. “It works great for my purposes.”
