While some people may envision a fuzzy blanket or a cozy couch when they hear the word “comfort,” for clinicians, comfort is a whole different ball game. In a career that often involves strained posture, repetitive movements, and maneuvering in tight spaces, dental professionals have their fair share of discomfort.

Comfort at the Core

Coltene aims to change that with its newest curing light, Coltolux Comfort, designed to provide a more comfortable experience for clinicians and patients with its small size, lightweight, and ease of use.

A successor to Coltene’s tried-and-true Coltolux LED curing light, the Coltolux Comfort LED curing light combines comfort, portability, and convenience, and according to Dr. Alfred dela Cruz, is a “fast, thorough, and powerful” performer that’s much better than the “old, weak curing light” that he’d been using for years.

Ergonomics & Angulation

Hoping for a “comfortable light with good angulation,” Dr. Abraham Jaskiel said the Coltolux Comfort “has great 90-degree angulation for hard-to-reach areas.” Appreciating its simple design, he described the light as “comfortable, lightweight, and easy to use.” When pushing the button to increase or decrease the time or light intensity, Dr. Jaskiel said, “My assistant did not hit any other buttons by mistake, which happens when we use other curing lights.”

Dr. Amir Noori called the Coltolux Comfort “very practical, lightweight, and easy to use,” and Dr. Robert Miller agreed that it is “very light and comfortable in the hand” and appreciated the 90-degree angle in the posterior. While “it was very light and easy to use with no technical skill needed,” Dr. John Jackfert said sometimes he “wished it had different modes.” Naming “the ergonomics” as her favorite feature, Dr. Mihaela Popa said the light is “a great product” that “did not require a lot of counter space."

Curing Performance

The Coltolux Comfort’s powerful 1,200 mW/cm2 irradiance is compatible with all camphorquinone-based photoinitiators, according to Coltene. A specially designed intraoral light shield allows clinicians to place the lens flush with the curing plane and blocks reflective blue light from the tooth surface. “I like the replaceable LED shield, which keeps the light focused straight and not diffracted from scratches, ” shared Dr. dela Cruz.

The large 11-mm lens diameter creates a homogeneous beam profile for uniform curing over the entire surface. With a 20-second cycle timer and an audible indication after 10 seconds, the “light is more efficient, making our materials set up faster,” said Dr. Miller. “I liked the wide area of coverage it provided,” noted Dr. Jackfert, and Dr. dela Cruz named the light’s “fast cures” as his favorite feature, explaining that “it shortened curing times from 20 seconds to 5 or 10 seconds.” Explaining how the light impacted her chairside experience, Dr. Popa said, “The powerful 10-second cure with the audible beep translates to increased productivity when doing quadrant dentistry.”

Portability & Battery Power

Designed for portability and convenience, the cordless Coltolux Comfort comes with a user-replaceable battery that, when fully charged, provides a minimum of 120 twenty-second curing cycles. An integrated light ring on the charging base provides a clear indication of charge status, regardless of base orientation. Calling the charger base “very functional,” Dr. Jackfert appreciated that he did not need to change the batteries or plug in the light to charge it and said, “It was nice for doing sealants in multiple hygiene bays due to its portability.” Also appreciating the curing light’s portability, Dr. Popa called it “easy to use as a portable instrument in a nursing home.” Noting that he “likes the charging base with the LED lights showing that it's charging,” Dr. dela Cruz added, “I like how the button is under a rubber membrane rather than a plastic membrane. Its seamless construction makes it easy to clean and keep hygienic.”

Overall, Dr. Miller summarized that Coltene's Coltolux Comfort LED curing light “is a very nice curing light,” making it a win-win for the patient and clinician.
