Digital intraoral scanners can provide dentists with a vital tool in combating one of the top complaints of labs—inaccurate impressions. And whether they handle restorative, orthodontic, or implant-born restorative cases, dentists want a scanner to simplify, not overly complicate, their digital impression workflow. Dr. Daniel Delrose, who began using the CS 3600 intraoral scanner from Carestream Dental when it was introduced in 2016, spoke to Dental Product Shopper about his experience.
DPS: When and why did you bring the CS 3600 from Carestream Dental into your practice?
We have been using digital impressions since 2002. We have had multiple systems in our office. The digital impression is extremely accurate compared to the “rubber” base impression. Being an early adopter, we knew that eventually, digital would replace analogue impressions. Today, with the CS 3600, it takes less time and is more accurate than a traditional impression.
DPS: How has using the CS 3600 impacted your workflow?
Carestream Dental always develops technology to help the dental clinician. They do not dictate how or where to send your restorative cases. So, the only change in our workflow is grabbing the CS 3600 in lieu of the impression gun. The result is restorations that fi t with little to no adjustments. If the lab has a question, you are looking at the same impression and bite they, the lab technician, is using. Patients are happy with the comfort of the CS 3600 scanner, and there’s no gagging mess.
DPS: How adaptable is this intraoral scanner to the clinician’s needs?
The scanner will almost completely replace the need for a “rubber base” material. We use the scanner for all restorative applications, from a single restoration to full-mouth rehabilitation. We use the CS 3600 for our orthodontic patients, and the savings for implant restoration in itself will pay for the scanner. No more impression copings, implant analogues, etc., are needed for your implant restorations. So, the CS 3600 is used for all restorative procedures, except dentures and removable partials with distal extensions.
DPS: What has been the reaction of your staff members to implementing the CS 3600?
Of all the systems we have had, this one has had the greatest impact on our team. They would rather use this scanner over any of the previous 5 systems that we used to have, or, over using traditional impressions. The training is minimal because most team members are used to having an intraoral camera. The ergonomic design facilitates the ease of use for the team and comfort for the patient. It can even be used as an intraoral camera.
