Orascoptic’s Endeavour XL headlight uses constant-current technology to provide a precise beam of light to help illuminate critical details in the oral cavity. With 25% longer run-time than the standard Endeavour headlight, the Endeavour XL provides up to 24 hours of continuous battery life. Its multiple light intensities, up to 85 lumens, allow the user to select the optimal light output for each procedure. Dr. James Shipley, who has tested Endeavour XL and found it to be significantly better than its predecessor, shared his experience with us.

DPSWhat is the chairside benefit of wearing a headlight during procedures?

I have used a headlight for a few years and have enjoyed its use immensely. I do at times work without my loupes, but when I do, I certainly miss my light. Any clinician is only as good a surgeon as his knowledge of anatomy and ability to see will allow. Wanting always to do my very best necessitates my use of loupes and a well-lit field.

DPS What makes Endeavour XL unique compared to other headlights you’ve used?

I found Endeavour XL by Orascoptic to be quite superior to any of the 4 lights I have used over the years, including its predecessor the Endeavour. While testing the Endeavour XL, I particularly recall removing a broken root tip from the distal socket of a lower second molar. So many times over my 45 years of practice I’ve had to rely on my experience alone to deal with such a problem, but this time that socket was so illuminated I could actually see the entire process. That light is “somethin’ else”! The entire circumference, all the way from the middle to the outer rim of the light, is one strong, consistent beam with no fuzzy edges.

DPS What other features have been most useful to you?

Most certainly, the increased battery life negates any complaint one might have about the pack being slightly heavier than the previous model. There is a lot of value in that battery pack. Once I turn on the headlight in the morning, I don’t have to worry about the battery life for the rest of the day.

One day during the testing period, I worked over 7 hours before turning the light off. When I returned to work the next morning, I discovered I had forgotten to plug the pack up to the charger the night before. I thought I’d just see how long the light would continue to function, and I used it all that day.

The Endeavour XL is an excellent light and light source. While I haven’t tested all the other systems on the market, I cannot imagine anything better.
