EMBRACING DENTISTRY’S TECHNOLOGY (R)EVOLUTION

I have been in private practice for about 20 years, and I remember being amazed at how much technology changed in those first few years. For example, film radiographs were replaced by digital, and the introduction of practice management software completely changed the way we ran the administrative end of things. How could things get any better? Incidentally, I thought the same about my first smartphone and tablet. Wow, was I wrong in thinking that the technology couldn't get any more advanced than it was in the year 2000. The last 10 years of technology innovations in dentistry haven't only been overwhelming and impressive...but absolutely FUN!

Personally, I‘ve always been skeptical at first when a new technology hits the convention floor, and I tend to do a ton of research outside of the manufacturers’ stated reports. Additionally, I am not a dentist who jumps on a technology "bandwagon" just because it is cool. That being said, the last 5 to 10 years of investing in technology have been absolutely rewarding and beneficial to me as a provider, and to my staff as users of this technology. As of today, my office has truly embraced the digital workflow and interface for every aspect of dentistry—from diagnosis and treatment to communication and finances.

So, I am honored to introduce the Evolving Technologies issue of Dental Product Shopper. Like I said, I have experienced firsthand this evolution over the past couple of decades and can attest to its dramatic and systemic benefits for my patients, my team, and myself. Turn to page 40 for this month’s introductory story on Evolving Technologies. There you’ll find a short article where I detail the positive effects on my practice of various technologies, including CAD/CAM treatment, digital imaging, magnification, lasers, clear aligner therapy, and more. And starting on page 44, you can take a deep dive into several specific high-tech innovations and how they can integrate into and benefit your practice.

Today’s advancing technologies—judiciously selected and used properly and to their full potential—have been absolutely critical in the continuing success of my general practice. And I am sure they’ll have the same impact on your practice.
