Endo Success? Reach For An Irrigation Station

A cordless device activates irrigants ultrasonically, enhancing disinfection and debridement in complex canal anatomy and promoting successful endo treatments

A station--train or bus—is where many journeys begin. It’s no different for endodontists, but their journey doesn’t usually involve mass transportation. It starts with a collection of tools and materials that pave the way for successful root canal treatments. Ryan Walsh, DDS, MS, calls it the “irrigation station”—and he relies on it multiple times every day.

“To have a handful of instruments and materials that I know are going to perform at a very high level, consistently, every single day, makes my life as a clinician that much easier,” Dr. Walsh shared. “There are certain things that I just can’t live without because they make up my irrigation station—from start to finish, they’re part of my endodontic protocol.”

Activation Is Key to Success

Topping the list in Dr. Walsh’s Keller, TX, endodontic practice is the EndoUltra, a cordless device from Vista Apex that provides ultrasonic energy to intercannular solutions. While irrigant delivery is an essential part of endo therapy, studies show that irrigants display enhanced antibacterial and tissue dissolution properties when they are ultrasonically activated post-delivery.

“We can put a best-in-class irrigant inside those canals, but without activation, it’s not living up to its full potential,” explained Dr. Walsh. “EndoUltra provides that extra boost in activity and efficacy to maximize my endodontic protocols.”

Handheld, portable, and with a long battery life, EndoUltra can generate a tip frequency of 40,000 to 50,000 Hz, and is 200 times more powerful than sonic devices, creating enough cavitation and acoustic streaming to effectively clean canals. “It’s cost-effective, portable, durable, and has a long battery life,” said Dr. Walsh, who also mentioned several more Vista Apex materials in his irrigation station. Here’s a sampling of his favorites:

Chlor-XTRA: A 6% sodium hypochlorite solution for irrigation, debridement, and cleansing of canals. “I use this on every patient and it’s my No. 1, go-to irrigant,” said Dr. Walsh.

Appli-Vac 1” Irrigating Tips: Slotted, side-vented, and bendable. “This is my everyday, go-to irrigation needle for delivering Chlor-XTRA into the canals,” Dr. Walsh explained.

Flexi-Glide Utility Dental Tips: These disposable, single-use tips have a flexible needle. “They allow me to introduce my sealer down to the apical third of the root canal space,” he added.

Fill Station for Syringes: "This takes all the mess out of using the sodium hypochlorite solution and there’s no waste,” Dr. Walsh said.

Luer-Lock Bottle Cap: “This makes dispensing EDTA into syringes a breeze,” he said. "When we don't have to worry about bleaching clothes with NaOCl, this is what we use to help our workflow efficiency."
