Ending the era of “watch and wait,” dentistry now has an easy, pain-free solution to treat early caries in all patients through innovative Guided Enamel Remineralization

In decades of clinical practice, Dr. Robert Mongrain has remained at the forefront of dental technology, adopting and lecturing on game-changing products and procedures. However, despite the many ways science and innovation have enabled improvements in patient care, there always remained a void. With a majority of patients exhibiting early caries, the traditional plan of action was little more than watching and waiting.

Now, there is a treatment that can diffuse into the enamel and remineralize early lesions.

“The focus has always been on preventing cavities from even happening. When the cavity has happened, dentists could put a filling in, but what I like about this treatment is its focus on addressing early caries,” said Dr. Mongrain, now a director of clinical advocacy at Heartland Dental.

Recently, Dr. Mongrain learned about Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, a biomimetic system for treatment of watch areas through Guided Enamel Remineralization. The clinically proven technology is suitable for all surfaces, including buccal, occlusal, and proximal, and for all patients, including children, via a fast, noninvasive, and nonstaining application.

Dr. Mongrain described this technology as the focus that dentistry was missing. “Prevention is predisease,” he said. “With Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, we have a technology that enables early intervention and the remineralization of early caries before a restoration is required.”

A Minimally Invasive Solution

Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus enables effective therapy of early, noncavitated carious lesions. Delivered as a low-viscosity liquid, the patented formulation diffuses into the enamel within 3 to 5 minutes, enabling salivary calcium, phosphate, and fluoride ions to begin remineralization.

Mariya Filipova, chief innovation officer at CareQuest Innovation Partners, believes there are many reasons patients and practices can benefit from this product. Not only does it meet the growing demand for more minimally invasive solutions in dentistry, but it also can be easily integrated into the workflow and applied in minutes by the dentist or hygienist without drilling, anesthesia, or pain.

“There are very few products on the market for early intervention in the caries process, and even fewer require only one application," Filipova said. "With any solution that requires multiple applications, compliance is very, very low. This product is truly a noninvasive care solution.”

With Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, dentists can now treat areas they would otherwise have just monitored, even with as much as 80% of patients presenting with early caries on proximal surfaces.*

“In my view, products like Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus will make a big difference for dentists who are currently looking at those watch areas that are not yet cavities and opting to wait until the patient comes back. But sometimes, the patient can’t or doesn’t come back. So, for those watch areas, if you could apply this solution once, that’s better for the patient and better for the practice," Filipova said.

Complementing Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus in the fight against early caries is Curodont Protect, a newly released anticavity and antisensitivity dental gel for in-office and at-home use. Delivered via topical application for all tooth surfaces, Curodont Protect is a remineralizing agent that protects enamel from caries.

The New Era of Dentistry

For Dr. Mongrain, these products are an ideal fi t for a new era in dentistry where, for example, innovations such as AI software and near-infrared imaging have boosted diagnostic capabilities as well as patient communication. It’s time, he said, to move past the traditional approach of simply monitoring the progression of early carious lesions.

“With Curodont, I have a documented technology that has been shown to remineralize and potentially eliminate the need for surgical intervention,” he said. “And that is what I’ve been waiting for. As dentists, we’re surgeons—we cut into and amputate teeth—and that’s how we think. Now, it’s time to think about helping people have a healthier lifestyle and keep their natural teeth for a lifetime.”
