Get More Room on That Tray with a Single Restorative
Combining the strength of a universal composite with the ease of a flowable, VOCO’s GrandioSO family of composites is a time-saving, efficient solution for Class I and II restorations
Most Class II restorative procedures commonly involve 2 products: a universal composite for strength and durability that’s layered on top of a flowable. It’s a proven technique that’s critical to building the wear resistance necessary for a long-lasting restoration. But it’s also tedious and time-consuming, neither of which is helpful for today’s busy workflows.
“I like using these materials for both Class I and II restorations—they’re fast, efficient, and simple.”

The GrandioSO flowable family of restorative materials can reduce this 2-product layering technique to just one with a formulation that combines the outstanding physical properties of universal composites with the ease of use found in flowables. The result? A faster, simplified, and more efficient way to complete most restorations. VOCO’s GrandioSO family of flowable products includes GrandioSO Flow, GrandioSO Heavy Flow, and GrandioSO Light Flow.
“The GrandioSO flowable family is a unique solution to restorative treatments,” explained Susan McMahon, DMD, AAACD, FAGD, in Pittsburgh, PA. “Class II decay and restoration is one of the most frequently performed procedures in dentistry. We’ve seen an uptick in diagnosis of interproximal decay due to advances in technology, such as infrared interproximal caries detectors and NIRI-enabled intraoral scanners. Clinicians have been searching for efficient and conservative ways to restore these small lesions, and these GrandioSO materials are a big timesaver compared to using a universal composite. They provide an excellent, long-lasting restoration.”
GrandioSO Heavy Flow
GrandioSO Heavy Flow is a highly viscous, light-cured, flowable composite that’s strong with the wear-resistance of a hybrid. An 83% filled nano-hybrid material, it is strong enough for Class I and II occlusal surfaces and simplifies the filling of undercuts, approximal boxes, and paragingival areas. Ideal for proximal and cervical areas, GrandioSO Heavy Flow offers increased stability with no runoff and also performs well when used with the GrandTEC glass fiber system.
“It’s ideal for Class V restorations because it flows into the internal line angles and fills without slumping,” Dr. McMahon said. “Obtaining the proper convex facial contour is simple and quick. It holds the shape of the emergence for an undetectable restoration that wears very well at the cervical margin and has a great color match.”
GrandioSO Flow
GrandioSO Flow is a light-cured, radiopaque, flowable, 81% filled nanohybrid composite that provides excellent wettability and color retention. Strong enough for Class I and II occlusal surfaces, and with the wear resistance of a hybrid, GrandioSO Flow is a thixotropic material that easily flows on demand without slumping, and offers precise application with a long, bendable tip.
“One of my favorite uses for GrandioSO Flow is for filling access holes for screw-retained zirconia implant crowns,” Dr. McMahon shared. “It has the perfect optical properties to blend with zirconia and the perfect physical properties to complete occlusal anatomy in the zirconia. It also wears extremely well and polishes well to match the polish on the crown. It’s unique from other flowables because its physical properties are like a packable composite: high compressive strength, adaptability, and polishability.”
GrandioSO Light Flow
GrandioSO Light Flow is an extremely flowable, highly stable, 76% filled nanohybrid composite that uses an ultra-fine intraoral tip for precise and hard-to-reach applications and small cavities. Highly esthetic with 8 shades that blend well, GrandioSO Light Flow exhibits a low viscosity for outstanding flow properties, while providing excellent handling and compatibility with all light-curing adhesives.
“I love this material for filling the small voids you can get when finishing anterior flat surface traditional composite, such as the voids that collect dust from finishing discs, cups, and spiral wheels,” Dr. McMahon explained. “Many other flowables don’t have the viscosity to fill into these small voids and can be polished away, leaving the original void. It polishes beautifully and I find it to be indispensable for these situations.”
Dr. McMahon reaches most often for GrandioSO Flow and GrandioSO Heavy Flow in her armamentarium, and lists efficiency, versatility, and performance as the top 3 reasons why they have become operatory staples. “GrandioSO Flow and Grandioso Heavy Flow polish beautifully and have the right opacity to disappear into the surrounding tooth structure,” she shared. “I like using these materials for both Class I and II restorations—they’re fast, efficient, and simple.”
