Innovative nano-ceramic hybrid CAD/CAM material offers the ideal solution for implant-supported restorations

It’s a well-known fact that eating hot and cold foods provokes an ebb and flow of tooth structures in a patient’s mouth. Many restorative materials, particularly zirconia, lack the thermal expansion to withstand these movements—leading to cracks in the material.

VOCO has a solution with its CAD/CAM materials. Available in both blocks (Grandio blocs) and pucks (Grandio discs), and based on VOCO's high-performance nano-hybrid composite, Grandio, they are the first-ever nano-ceramic hybrid CAD/CAM restoratives engineered to mimic natural tooth structure. Indications include crowns, inlays, onlays, veneers, and implant-supported crowns.

“The biggest advantage I see with Grandio blocs and discs is their thermal expansion,” said Koorosh Aghakhani, CDT, owner of New Pars Dental Lab in Houston, TX. “Eating and drinking hot and cold foods causes expansion and shrinkage, and Grandio discs is the first product we’ve used that reacts very closely to natural teeth, so there are no cracks or breaks. In fact, this is the first material we’ve ever used that has never cracked, and we’ve been using it for over a year."

A Time-Saving Material

Grandio discs and blocs have the highest filler content (86% w/w) for enhanced strength and excellent wear resistance. With no shrinkage factor and an option of 11 shades, the nano-ceramic composite displays tooth-like elasticity and thermal expansion, allowing for thinner crown margins. In addition to the composite's natural esthetics with enhanced color stability, clinicians will enjoy easy intraoral polishability, characterization, and repair.

“The speed of the job, quality of the material, and ease of handling are the highlights of Grandio discs and blocs.”

“With other materials, if the dentist needs to make an adjustment to an implant-retained restoration, it has to be returned to us for rework. But with Grandio CAD/CAM materials, the dentist can easily intraorally repair and polish, or even stain and glaze it for a super esthetic and predictable outcome. It never has to come back to our lab,” Aghakhani explained. “It’s a big time-saver for dentists and their patients.”

Materials most often used for CAD/CAM restorations range from silicate ceramics and lithium disilicate to hybrid ceramics and zirconia—none of which have the thermal expansion properties or shock absorption of Grandio discs and blocs. That puts these materials at an increased risk for breakage.

Additionally, Grandio discs and blocs don’t require firing, resulting in an even greater time savings. In business for more than 20 years, Aghakhani believes the Grandio materials save his lab time, which is then transferred on to dentists and their patients.

“I’ve received many favorable comments from dentists after using this product,” he said. “The speed of the job, quality of the material, and ease of handling are the highlights of Grandio discs and blocs.”
