How many times have we heard the expression “thinking outside the box”? While creativity and finding new ways to accomplish the same task is beneficial in any profession, it’s especially helpful in dentistry. Just ask Jennifer Derse, DDS, an Espire Dental provider in the Denver, CO, area, who uses an innovative restorative technique with a tried-and-true product line.
VOCO’s family of GrandioSO Flowables are highly filled nano-hybrid flowable composites available in light (low), medium, and heavy (high) viscosities.
“The 3 viscosity options really make it my go-to system,” Dr. Derse shared. In addition to using GrandioSO Flow for traditional restorations, Dr. Derse and her clinician partners have found success using the material with the injection molding technique.
“Injection molding using either the medium (GrandioSO Flow) or high viscosities (GrandioSO Heavy Flow) is something we can offer patients who are not yet ready for ceramic veneers, or if we need to transition a patient’s occlusion throughout treatment,” she said.
She recalled treating a patient who presented with new veneers that were constricting her function and causing headaches.
“I deprogrammed the patient to establish a new vertical, built up the upper posterior teeth on the occlusal and lingual surfaces, and equilibrated her to a comfortable position where the first point of contact was posterior rather than anterior,” she explained. “This procedure could be done with the GrandioSO Heavy Flow while working freehand or using the injection molding technique, whichever is easier in your hands.”
