HySolate: the Dental Dam that ‘Hit the Jackpot’
Coltene’s new HySolate Dental Dam BLACK EDITION improves on 150 years of isolation technique
For decades, Coltene has been producing high-quality dental dam materials and accessories. But even after all this time, the company saw yet another opportunity to improve on a very elementary yet integral element of restorative and endodontic dentistry.
“We’ve been isolating in dentistry for over 150 years, so we have plenty of options in regard to dental dams out there on the market,” says Mario F. Romero, DDS, an international lecturer and clinical director of Romero Dental Seminars. Does this mean that there’s no longer room for innovation in this area?
Does the dental industry really need yet another dental dam?
With Coltene’s recent release of the HySolate Dental Dam BLACK EDITION, Dr. Romero is able to answer those questions in the affirmative: “I personally think that this one hit the jackpot.”
“HySolate takes all the guesswork away because it’s preprinted.”

What’s New with HySolate?
First and foremost, Coltene has announced that all of its standard latex dental dams have now been replaced with improved, low-protein and powder-free latex dams. This has been done to reduce the risk of hypersensitive reactions to the latex, giving clinicians greater peace of mind when using dental dams in their practices.
Second, HySolate BLACK EDITION was created to allow for higher contrast and, thus, improved visibility during procedures. Dr. Romero points out that the black color and nonreflective surface mean that there is no glare to contend with during treatment. He also appreciates how the higher contrast and zero-glare allow him to take higher-quality photographs of his cases.
Last, but not least, HySolate Dental Dam BLACK EDITION comes preprinted with markings clinicians can use to determine where to punch holes in the material.
“HySolate takes all the guesswork away because it’s preprinted,” says Dr. Romero. This means dentists will have an easier time placing the dental dam and achieving ideal isolation every time.
Benefits of the Dental Dam
Isolating with a dental dam might be a technique that is more than a century old, but it has fallen in and out of popularity among dentists over time. It’s important for clinicians to review the benefits of the dental dam on occasion to help them find new applications that will enhance their treatment workflow and outcomes.
According to Coltene, using a dental dam:
1. Ensures a dry working field that is vital to the success of endodontic and restorative procedures
2. Maintains clear visibility for the clinician
3. Protects patients from aspirating on or ingesting debris and small instrument elements that become dislodged during the procedure
4. Protects the soft tissue from irritation during treatment 5 Prevents the release of potentially infectious spatter, aerosols, and airborne particles
Dr. Romero would add another benefit to the list: retraction. A dental dam made from latex is highly resistant, and the tension it places on the mouth can assist with retraction, reducing fatigue and frustration for both clinician and patient.
Many dentists have lost the habit of using a dental dam because they see it as a time-consuming additional step that can slow down their workflows. HySolate, however, makes it easier than ever for dentists to use a dental dam and experience the benefits in their own practices.
