Highlighted Episode—Episode 97: Dentistry Trains You to be a Clinical Dentist, Not a Business
Clinician’s Take:
In this episode, Dr. Sullivan’s guest, Dr. JB, shares how he was unprepared to own multiple practices— let alone a single practice. It's a good cautionary tale that warns against rushing into a business expansion, and instead, encourages clinicians to focus on the here and now. The conversation hit close to home for me, as I currently own multiple practices as part of a startup DSO. While we face similar challenges to Dr. JB’s, there are infrastructure and processes in place to counteract employee turnover.
There's no argument that dentists are trained to be technicians and not business owners. However, I think it is possible to learn ownership from people who aren't flim-flam artists—that is, if you can find the right mentors. I also thought the advice for new graduates was sound, even though in my practice area, I haven't seen new dentists face signifi cant hardships. There are plenty of small and large practices hiring—including my own—and we haven't had a massive surge in applications.
Overall, I found the podcast conversation interesting and appreciated that the clinicians were willing to talk about their failures—a rarity in the dental world.
