LumiSmile: A Picture of Case Conversion
With LumiSmile, practices can offer each patient the unique experience to preview and share their perfect, new smile

Imagine that a simple photo, taken on an iPhone over the course of a few seconds, could turn into thousands of dollars’ worth of cosmetic treatment. It’s a simple protocol that can be repeated for every patient, no matter why they’re visiting: An assistant asks to take the patient’s photo for a free smile makeover, the photo is uploaded and enhanced via an app on the phone, and the patient sees the possibility of his or her new smile after cosmetic treatment.
This streamlined recipe for case conversion is called LumiSmile, and it lives within a new digital smile makeover app from DenMat. The mobile application is the cornerstone of DenMat’s triedand- true Smile Discovery Program (SDP), which provides dental practices tools to grow their esthetic business.
The SDP has been boosting practices’ cosmetic business for years, as it allows patients to see what their smiles could look like—regardless of whether they were considering a cosmetic upgrade. Until the new app was developed, the process involved a picture being taken in the practice and transferred to a computer for uploading to a portal. DenMat would design the new smile and the practice would print out three pictures to be given to the patient— the original smile, the smile with Lumineers, and the smile with LumiSmile White, DenMat’s tooth whitening brand.
The app is a welcome addition to the program, which was already a success for Dr. Apolinar Madrigal at Turlock Smiles in Turlock, CA. “Most patients who come into your office aren’t thinking about cosmetic treatment, and they don’t know what change can be accomplished if we don’t show them,” Dr. Madrigal said. “With LumiSmile, you can actually get the patients emotionally involved, because they’re seeing what they would look like with that change.”
Bacterial biofilm is virtually universal in untreated DUWLs and can actually begin forming in a new dental unit within days. A range of options are available to significantly reduce biofilm and dramatically improve the safety of DUWL water. Many protocols involve administering treatments or managing systems on a daily basis—an effective yet time-consuming solution. What if there were a solution that provided a year’s worth of DUWL disinfection? Enter Sterisil Straw V2, which provides effective silver-based waterline treatment for 365 days.
Fewer Steps, More Smiles
With the LumiSmile app, practices can now take a photo of every patient using an iOS mobile device such as an iPhone or iPad, upload the photo, and then present the enhanced photos (one each for Lumineers and whitening) to the patient minutes later as part of a cosmetic consultation. A staff member can quickly and easily send the new images to the patient’s phone or email so they have a copy. This gives patients the unique experience of not only being able to preview their potential new smile, but share it with friends and family, and post it on social media if they so choose.

“Now, the patient actually has it in digital form on their phone, where they’ll share it or show it to friends and family, and that’s going to create more of an urgency for the patient to accept treatment,” said Dr. Madrigal. “They can look at their phone and see what they’re actually going to look like, and that’s going to get them excited. So, it should definitely drive an outcome of more case acceptance.”

With the simplified process, Dr. Madrigal said practices can offer LumiSmile far more often and expect a greater number of conversions. “That’s because it doesn’t take any time, really. It just takes the time for the assistant or anyone on your team to ask the patient, ‘Would you like me to take a photo with my phone and we’ll do a smile design for you?’”
Cosmetic Practice Building
Dr. Madrigal began participating in the SDP in 2018 out of his desire to provide beautiful smiles in line with his focus on minimally invasive dentistry. Lumineers are porcelain veneers that offer the greatest preservation of tooth structure possible. Fabricated using high-quality porcelain, Lumineers’ low-viscosity glass allows for the pressing of restorations as thin as 0.3 mm with strong, leucite-reinforced ceramic. “Lumineers have been around for over 20 years, and they are minimally invasive—there is minimal or sometimes even no tooth reduction necessary to create a smile with these veneers,” Dr. Madrigal said.
As an SDP member, Dr. Madrigal’s office receives digital marketing tools, including practice profiles on Lumineers.com and SnapOnSmile.com that help drive business for his practice, and customized materials to promote the practice online and in the office as a Lumineers provider. Members also receive product benefits each month, including free and discounted DenMat products.
As the centerpiece of this program, the new LumiSmile app offers a streamlined operation for smile design and a variety of practice optimization tools. Within the app, practices will be able to monitor case conversion and remarket proposals to patients who did not accept treatment.
For Dr. Madrigal, the proof is in the numbers. “Your patients already trust you, but they may have never thought about cosmetic dentistry. So, if you show them what can be accomplished with just a simple photo that’s going to take your assistant 5 seconds to take, those 5 seconds can turn into $10,000. So, it’s going to be revenue for the practice, and the patient receives a beautiful new smile.”

CASE IN POINT
Felicia came in to Dr. Madrigal’s office for posterior work and occlusal issues. She had not been considering cosmetic treatment in the anterior, but after the dental assistant took a LumiSmile picture, Felicia saw the potential for her smile. “She’s a very happy person—always smiling. But her smile really didn’t go with her personality because she did have some decay, some fanning, and fluorosis of the front teeth,” Dr. Madrigal said. Felicia opted for treatment with Lumineers, and was thrilled with the transformative results. “With LumiSmile, we showed her what a great change that could be, and she’s very excited about the outcome.”
