The Two New Restorative Materials that Can Do It All

3M RelyX Universal Resin Cement and 3M Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive work together to provide exceptional bond strength and reduce inventory

While having an abundance of restorative materials may seem worthwhile, using multiple resin cements, primers, and adhesives can be a hassle to manage—especially when you need to ensure that all the materials work in harmony to produce the strongest and most esthetic restorations possible.

Fortunately, the days of sifting through a crowded inventory of products during your restorative procedures could be coming to an end, thanks to 3M. The manufacturer is proving that good things come in pairs with a cement and adhesive that not only offer individual benefits to the restorative procedure, but can be combined to deliver enhanced bond strength during demanding clinical scenarios.

RelyX Universal Resin Cement works both as a standalone, self-adhesive cement, as well as an adhesive resin cement when used in tandem with 3M Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive. RelyX Universal Resin Cement delivers excellent bond strength as a self-adhesive resin cement, treating virtually all indications with or without light curing and with no need for an additional adhesive. Offering outstanding self-adhesion for maximized efficiency, it treats most cases with no need for an additional adhesive or primer for light or self-cure.

3M Scotchbond Universal Plus AdhesiveScotchbond Universal Plus adhesive is the strong partner for adhesive cementation cases when additional retention is desired. It is a unique radiopaque, all-in-one universal adhesive for all direct and indirect bonding indications, according to 3M. Additionally, because the adhesive is cured by the cement, no light-cure is needed, making it a fully aligned system.

Impressive Ergonomics

Along with prioritizing superior self-adhesive dentin bond strength, 3M wanted to ensure its new RelyX Universal Resin Cement was ergonomically designed for easy application. A new, proprietary automix syringe delivery system offers a self-sealing design for hygienic storage, and each 3.4-gram syringe holds about 15 to 20 applications. Additionally, the slim ergonomic shape uses 50% less plastic.

“While most cement systems are two-barrel systems, this new 3M design is much more ergonomic and easier to grip and hold on to,” said Mark Cotton, Market Segmentation Manager at 3M Oral Care Solutions Division. He added that the new, unique syringe design provides greater flexibility during application.

The Micro Mixing Tips on the RelyX Universal Resin Cement create 80% less cement waste per application. The unique chemistry ensures excess outflow stays put at the restoration margins and can be easily removed after tack curing."

The cement also comes with a thin, long elongation tip that supports easy root canal application.

Radiopaque for Diagnostic Clarity

On average, dentists find at least one x-ray per day difficult to interpret due to radiolucency under an existing restoration. Unclear radiographs can lead to misdiagnosed cases and invasive overtreatment. According to 3M, Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive is the first radiopaque universal adhesive offering dentin-like radiopacity to eliminate doubt while viewing radiographs.

“Questionable x-rays are commonplace for clinicians; they often have to determine what is the adhesive layer and what is underlying decay,” said Cotton. “With Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive, the dentin-like radiopacity helps to overcome misdiagnosis.”

An improved version of the popular Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, this material provides high bond strength to seal caries-affected dentin by forming a well-defined, void-free hybrid layer that prevents secondary decay. These properties maximize the clinician's ability to preserve natural tooth structure, support minimally invasive preparation guidelines, and greatly reduce the risk of postoperative sensitivity.

In fact, in a field evaluation involving 309 dentists and over 20,000 applications, 99% of dentists reported that Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive showed virtually no postoperative sensitivity.

Universally suitable for both direct and indirect restorations, as well as all etching techniques, this adhesive is fully dual- and self-cure compatible, so users do not require a dual-cure activator bottle—yet another way that 3M’s new restorative duo keeps the amount of materials needed for one procedure to an absolute minimum.
