Perio Tray Therapy
A periodontist shares how these custom trays designed with a patented seal and filled with a proprietary low concentration of hydrogen peroxide are a patient and practice builder
There are few dental products out there, if any, that patients will say that they love. But when Dr. Shalini Sethi asks her patients what they love about the Perio Tray—custom-fabricated to deliver hydrogen peroxide deep into periodontal pockets—the answer is three-fold: whiter teeth, fresher breath, and gums that no longer bleed.
Dr. Sethi started using Perio Protect with her moderate chronic periodontitis patients who had persistent 4- to 5-mm pockets with bleeding, but for whom periodontal surgery may have been too invasive. “During maintenance, I noticed these patients really liked Perio Tray therapy and saw a big reduction in bleeding and inflammation,” she shared. “I also noticed their tissues looked very pink and fi rm and healthy, and many of them said they felt like their gums were tighter.”
Doctor & Patient Approved
This positive patient feedback encouraged Dr. Sethi to try Perio Tray therapy as an adjunct to her periodontal surgery, particularly for patients with localized areas of disease. “Now, when I treatment plan a patient for osseous surgery, I tell them about Perio Protect and have them start wearing the trays before surgery as well as during the healing phase,” she said, adding that this combination yielded better post surgery results with less bleeding and inflammation. “Since the hydrogen peroxide is working subgingivally, it helps reduce periodontal pathogens during healing.”

Perio Tray therapy also has been a good alternative for Dr. Sethi’s patients with an unknown etiology for their gum disease who suffer from burning gingival tissue, redness, or spontaneous bleeding with no signs of bone loss or pocket depths. “I tell patients that there’s really no harm in trying Perio Protect because it’s just hydrogen peroxide gel,” she said. “They get multiple benefits out of it—reduced bacteria, healthier gums, and whiter teeth.”
Out of the hundreds of Perio Protect cases that Dr. Sethi and her associates complete each year, most patients have been eager to move forward. “I approach it as being a one-time maintenance for the rest of their lives—not unlike how they keep their car in maintenance with checkups and oil changes—and that it will likely prevent them from spending thousands of dollars down the road if surgery is needed.”
Ongoing Perio Care
Perio Protect has the power to continue working beyond the dental chair, especially for patients with peri-implantitis or poor home care. “Even if I don’t choose the surgery route, I prescribe Perio Tray therapy because I feel like it’s the easiest thing they can do,” she said. “It's a good asset to the practice because it helps me keep these patients in maintenance. It keeps the mouth healthier and fresher, and I see reduced amounts of plaque. Even when I'm doing my checks, I can’t help but think, ‘Oh, this is so much nicer.’"
