A Prime Choice for Intraoral Scanning
Primescan offers dental professionals the ideal balance of speed, accuracy, and usability
As far as intraoral scanners go, speed, usability, and accuracy are key factors. You may be thinking that no scanner has all three—if it’s quick, it can’t be accurate; and if it’s accurate and fast, it must be nearly impossible to use. Enter Dentsply Sirona’s Primescan, the intraoral scanner that has it all.
Dr. Paul Bookman of Bryn Mawr, PA, has used previous generations of Dentsply Sirona intraoral scanners, but noted that Primescan is his favorite of them all. “Primescan blows the other scanners away,” shared Dr. Bookman. “The speed of it, the accuracy of it—I prefer Primescan over all the other scanners I’ve worked with or tested.”
Unmatched Usability
Primescan has proven to be extremely user-friendly. Dr. Bookman has taught his team members how to use the scanner and described the process as very simple. “The learning curve on a Primescan is so small,” shared Dr. Bookman. “It’s a half-hour job to teach them how to use the scanning software, and within a day or two, they’re doing full-arch scans in two minutes.”
The other associate dentists at Dr. Bookman’s practice, who have long been accustomed to capturing traditional impressions, have started to take scans instead. “My associates were always taking conventional impressions, but now with Primescan, they’re doing all scans,” he noted. “They find it easier and they like the fact that they can walk out of the room and let the assistant scan.”
“When I’m doing my new patient evaluation, it’s so nice to be able to bring their images up on the screen and show them everything from malocclusions to cracked fillings to swollen gums.”

Although Dr. Bookman enjoys pairing his Primescan with an in-house CEREC milling unit for single-visit crowns, he noted that it also facilitates faster lab workflows. “I have two associates who aren’t yet using the digital impressions to make in-house crowns, but they’re still using the Primescan as often as possible to scan their preps and send cases to the lab. It’s just a phenomenal scanner,” he explained.
The Doctor’s Favorite Features
Dr. Bookman enjoys the ease and convenience of sending digital scans to the lab, and even noted that many labs give discounts for submitting digital materials rather than models. He also likes that the turnaround time is faster. “It was a very easy switch once we got the Primescan to start doing all our cases digitally, versus only using a scanner when we were doing an in-house crown,” he shared.
Another one of Dr. Bookman’s favorite uses for the Primescan is scanning all of his new patients. “We do full-arch scans of all new patients, so when I’m doing my new patient evaluation, it’s so nice to be able to bring their images up on the screen and show them everything from malocclusions to cracked fillings to swollen gums,” he said. “It just gives so much detail from an educational standpoint, especially to a new patient. I really find it invaluable.”
