Sometimes, it’s the simplest tools that make a successful restoration, and for Gary Johnson, DDS, MAGD, who has maintained a private practice in the Chicago suburbs for over 4 decades, the Pro-Matrix single-use matrix band from Young Innovations is simply one of those tools.

“Using my restorative materials with a Pro-Matrix single-use band provides a perfectly shade-matched composite with tight natural contacts and minimal cleanup,” he said.

Band Together for Restorative Success

A quick and easy matrix system that’s fully disposable, Pro-Matrix can be used with all restorative materials, in all quadrants, and for every cavity class. The bands come preassembled, which means there’s no application tools or setup required—reducing injury risk compared with sharp Toffelmire matrix systems.

This lack of sharpness also means the Pro-Matrix is more comfortable for patients and less traumatic to tissues than metal bands. Adding to their versatility, Pro-Matrix bands come in Standard Narrow and Curved Narrow (4.5 mm) for premolars and pediatrics, and in Standard Wide and Curved Wide (6 mm) for molars.

“The Pro-Matrix band helps protect adjacent teeth during preparation and allows restorative procedures to be completed quickly, efficiently, and economically with better results,” added Dr. Johnson, who recently found the perfect opportunity to use a Curved Wide Pro-Matrix band on a patient who presented with marginal leakage of an existing composite on tooth No. 12 and a new carious lesion.

"I placed the Pro-Matrix band on tooth No. 13 to protect the mesial surface from bur damage," he said. That turned out to be a valuable step, as the band was nicked by the bur while removing the patient's existing composite and decay. "After polishing the margins and cleaning the preparation, I placed another Curved Wide Pro-Matrix band on tooth No. 12 with the arm placed bucally. I specifically chose this  precontoured band to provide a tight interproximal contact, and also because it offers easy adjustment and torquing without the need for additional instruments."

Improving Patient Outcomes

Dr. Johnson is not alone in his high regard for Pro-Matrix single-use bands. In fact, during its recent Dental Product Shopper review, Pro-Matrix received high marks for its convenient disposable design, easy placement and removal, and ability to achieve tight interproximal contacts—ultimately earning a DPS Best Product award.

Overall, clinicians found that Pro-Matrix was a welcome alternative to time-consuming traditional matrix systems, with the added benefit of increasing patient comfort and decreasing chair time.

“Pro-Matrix provides an inexpensive and easy way to achieve a well-shaped and acceptable direct restoration quickly and with less effort,” said Dr. Johnson. “It gives me a clinical alternative that provides my patients with a quality restoration at a reasonable price, reduces my staff’s workload, and meets my criteria of quick, easy, and efficient.”
