Sponge derived from cellulose controls bleeding by safely and efficiently conforming to dental cavity wounds
Even the cleanest tooth extractions or periodontal surgeries that avoid damaging soft tissues cause patient bleeding—sometimes up to 24 hours after the procedure. But not all hemostatic products designed to control bleeding conform completely to the
socket. Some gauzes act as scabs to prevent bleeding and require direct pressure, gauze saturation, and drying—making it a challenge to halt patients’ bleeding in certain cases.
Medicom’s SafeGauze HemoStat absorbable hemostatic dressing creates a plug that adheres to the wound and closes off blood cells. When it comes in contact with blood or fluids, the sponge expands and transforms into a clear, viscous gel that completely fills and adheres to the extraction socket. The material eventually dissolves to saline and glucose.
The sterile fabric is prepared by chemically treating regenerated cellulose and is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for safe and effective use in dental cavities, such as when filling wound voids, sealing capillary ends, or activating the clotting system.
During the recent Dental Product Shopper evaluation of SafeGauze HemoStat, a team of clinicians lauded the product’s ability to quickly absorb blood and other fluids, forming a barrier for clotting. Dr. Tiffany Lee, who found the product easy to insert into extraction sites, observed that the clotting was immediate once the gauze was placed, even on medically complicated or compromised patients on blood thinners.
Periodontist Dr. Ravichandra Juluri used SafeGauze HemoStat instead of a collagen plug and tape, and shared, “It is easy to pack in the socket and doesn’t stick to instruments.” Dr. Juluri liked the easy-to-use foil packets for individual unit doses, and Dr. Lee agreed, adding that the unit dose packaging instilled a sense of security for patients and practitioner.
