HENRY SCHEIN DENTAL
Amalgam Separators
Compliance means protecting your practice, your patients, and the environment
Although less than 1% of mercury released to the environment from manmade sources comes from dental amalgam, it is important for dental practices to serve as good stewards of the environment by capturing and recycling this waste. To that end, the ADA is working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to encourage dental best management practices for amalgam waste, and compliance with the EPA’s final rule on amalgam separators, adopted in 2017.
The EPA rule mandates that dental offices install a certified amalgam separator for the proper recycling of amalgam waste by July 14, 2020. Newly built or acquired dental offices have 90 days from the date of opening to install a separator. Those practices with an existing system are grandfathered for 10 years.
For dental professionals, compliance means following sound waste-management practices and protecting what’s most important—their patients. By taking proactive measures, dentists also can avoid the potential for fines or practice shutdown.
Fortunately, Henry Schein can help practices quickly and easily meet compliance standards with a selection of amalgam separators that achieve at least 95% removal efficiency and are certified to the ISO 11143 standard by NSF International.
