From natural physiology to bruxism and tooth loss, occlusion is influenced by a broad range of factors. Given that virtually every restorative, cosmetic, or surgical procedure implies a change in occlusal proportions, and as little as 15 µm of occlusal interference can cause patients severe irritation or discomfort, it becomes clear that occlusion is one of the most critical concepts in dentistry. However, understanding and treating occlusion can pose numerous challenges—many of which arise from the products used in detection.
A Standout Solution for Occlusion
Dr. Rami Chayah, who runs a general practice with an emphasis on esthetic dentistry, has over the years used several brands of articulating paper that fell short of his expectations and clinical needs. “With other papers, you would always have tears and the markings would wash away easily on moist surfaces.” Additionally, he struggled to find a solution that provided the level of precision required for testing the smooth surfaces of ceramic veneers. The first is tear resistance, enabled by the paper’s durable, fiber-reinforced construction. Second, Dr. Chayah noted that “the markings are clearly visible and very precise.” He went on to explain that, because of the paper’s hydrophilic characteristics, it adapts perfectly and delivers reliable results, even on moist occlusal surfaces. PROGRESS 100 features progressive color transfer, a property enabled by the integration of hydrophilic waxes and pharmaceutical oils. This unique combination, coupled with the bonding agent Transculase, enhances detection of high spots on hard-to-locate surfaces, including ceramics and highly polished metals.

High Spot Detection, Simplified
Dr. Chayah has found even more success with PROGRESS 100 by combining it with another Bausch product: 12-µm Arti-Fol metallic shimstock film. “I combine the articulating paper with a metallic articulating film in a 2-phase method,” Dr. Chayah explained. “First, I use PROGRESS 100 articulating paper. The bonding agent of the thicker 100-µm paper is transferred to the tooth as a fi ne coating. Then, I use the 12-µm Arti-Fol metallic film in a contrasting color. The color of the thin 12-µm material transfers to the bonding agent, making the high spots very visible as a ‘bullseye’ mark.”
According to Dr. Chayah, the accuracy afforded by the pairing of these products has become invaluable in helping him identify occlusal high spots. “Bausch has gone further than other companies toward solving the issues that dentists face every day," he said.
