Heat-treated rotary and reciprocating file systems offer flexibility, safety, and efficiency—even in the most challenging cases

CHRISTOPHER COOK, DMD

A native of Fort Thomas, KY, Dr. Cook graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1995. After graduation, he served 6 years as an officer in the U.S. Navy as a general dentist, where he served in North America and Europe. In 2003, Dr. Cook opened Hillside Endodontics in Floyds Knobs, IN. He eventually opened Louisville Endodontics in Louisville, KY, to be near his growing family. He is a member of the American Association of Endodontics, the American Dental Association, the Kentucky Dental Association, the Louisville Dental Association, and is past president of the Southern Indiana Dental Association. Dr. Cook lectures across the country and conducts many continuing education courses in endodontics. He is also a key opinion leader for Komet USA.

When reciprocating files first came to market, Dr. Chris Cook was a bit skeptical. Since first trying Komet’s Procodile Q reciprocating files, his perspective has completely shifted—to the point where he decided to hybridize his endo routine. Now, Dr. Cook uses both Procodile Q reciprocating files and FQ rotary files, both members of Komet’s Q Series endodontic file system. Here, he explains how these unique heat-treated file systems are adaptable to any clinician’s techniques and preferences.

As an endodontist, I often see patients with “crazy” canal anatomy. For example, after capturing a radiograph of an elderly patient’s tooth No. 2, I had difficulty visualizing their canal. We took a CBCT scan for better visualization, and it was still hard to determine the shape of what appeared to be a mid-root S-shaped canal—not a pretty sight when it comes to instrumentation.

This was my first patient case using Komet’s Procodile Q file system, and I was amazed at how efficient and safe it made the procedure. Before, I likely would have lost the glide path, zipped, or ledged with this type of curved anatomy. While this procedure was no walk in the park, the Procodile Q files fared much better than others I’ve used in the past, and I trust them to work well for these types of complex cases.

Remarkably Flexible Files

The greatest features of the Q Series files—including the reciprocating Procodile Q system and the newer rotary FQ system—include their great flexibility and efficient cutting qualities. The system offers a broad range of heat-treated files, with each featuring a variably tapered core and double-S cross-section that increase chip space while effectively removing infected tissue and debris. This design is also more resistant to cyclic fatigue and decreases the risk of file fractures to ensure safer treatments.

I’ve used the FQ files on a maxillary second molar where it’s generally more difficult to access the canal, and the files’ flexibility and high cutting efficiency allowed me to clean out the canal quickly with less work on my part and with fewer passes. Their efficiency is very impressive.

Best of Both Worlds

I have never been one to take risks with the files I use on my patients. If something doesn't feel right, I throw them away. I regularly check my files for distortion or signs of separation and have found no issues with the Q Series files. Their bendability and adaptability have allowed for optimal preparations without worrying about the procedure going awry.

Komet’s Q Series system is bound to have a file that can be used comfortably with any clinician’s personal preference. This is coming from someone who was never a big fan of reciprocating files when they first came to market, but who has come to appreciate their evolution to date. I have successfully hybridized my routine by practicing with both the Procodile Q and FQ systems, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ultimately, what I love most about Komet are the people behind the company and their passion for being industry leaders in dentistry and patient care. They don’t want the cheapest products or the largest product portfolio. They want the products they bring to market to be the best of the best. This priority shines through and through with its Q Series files.
